It’s been a few months now since Alistair Overeem was taken out by Stipe Miocic, and the heavyweight’s starting to look towards his next bout.
Overeem faced the heavyweight champ in September at UFC 203, and Miocic finished the decorated fighter in the opening round. The defeat snapped Overeem’s four fight winning streak, and left his overall record at 41-15.
So what’s next for the 36 year-old “Reem”? Who is currently ranked #3 in the UFC’s heavyweight division? Well, recently Overeem appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and while discussing his next bout, the Dutch fighter stated (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I have no idea,” Overeem said. “There’s a bunch of top 10 guys not booked. I believe at this level it doesn’t really matter, the top 10 guys, top five guys, it’s all good. … I don’t have beef with anybody but after that first fight with [Fabricio] Werdum, that could be something interesting. [Ben] Rothwell could be nice, right. I lost two and a half years ago Other than that, Bigfoot [Silva] is a fight I would like to avenge, but he’s not with UFC any longer. Maybe Travis [Browne] is a fight I could avenge. That’s just a fight I thought should have been in my favor. I know I’m better that this guy.”
These are some interesting suggestions. Werdum is currently scheduled to fight Cain Velasquez at UFC 207 in December, so, he’s likely not next when you factor in scheduling. Plus, if Werdum wins, he could lock up a rematch with Miocic. Rothwell or Browne make sense? If either guy is interested. Or what about Alexander Volkov who recently came over to the UFC?
In the meantime, GLORY recently announced that Overeem will be a guest commentator this weekend for the kickboxing promotion’s “Collision” card.
