If you’re a big time, MMA fan, then you know the last few years have been scandal ridden for Jones. There’s been a DUI, a positive test for cocaine, a hit-and-run incident, and more recently, a positive test for the banned substances hydroxy-clomiphene and Letrozole. In the case of the latter, Jones’ team demonstrated that he had inadvertently ingested the substances via a contaminated product. The 29 year-old fighter was still suspended, however, until next July.
Well, in advance of a December 11th grappling match with Dan Henderson at Submission Undergound 2, Jones appeared on the JRE. While discussing the “partying” he used to do, Jones reported the following (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I had this thing where I just felt invincible,” Jones said. “I did a lot of wild stuff leading up to the fight. I had this crazy thing that I would do, where I would party one week before every fight, and I did it throughout my whole career. It was so stupid, but it was this mental crutch that I had. One week before every fight I would go out, and I would get blacked out wasted.
“My logic was, ‘If this guy were to beat me somehow, I could look myself in the mirror and say, ‘I lost because I got hammered the week before the fight.’ It was a safety net. I did it my whole career. I would go out and get hammered a week before every fight.”
It’s certainly going to be interesting how Jones performs moving forward. There’s no question that “Bones” is one of the greatest, if not the best fighter of all time, but it remains to be seen if he’ll be able to build on his fighting legacy.
In Jones’ only bout of 2016, he scored a unanimous decision win over Ovince Saint Preux in April.
