Cody Garbrandt has had a pretty, pretty, impressive campaign, and if he takes the bantamweight title at UFC 207, “No Love” says he should be “Fighter of the Year”.
Garbrandt has been booked to face the champion Dominick Cruz on December 30th, after taking out Augusto Mendes, Takeya Mizugaki and Thomas Almeida earlier this year. Recently the Team Alpha Male Fighter appeared on The Luke Thomas Show , and Garbrand said the following (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I think I should be Fighter of the Year. I go from unranked to world champion in one year. Before I got in the UFC, I wrote down on a piece of paper a goal that I was going to make it to the UFC in 2015 and then I’ll be the world champion before 2017 so I’m right on track. I pull out that piece of paper all the time and look at it. It’s motivation…
“So that’ll be nice, fighter of the year. I think I deserve it. Dominick is one of the top bantamweights, top fighters in the world…”
There you have it. Now, first things first, and that’s getting by Cruz, one of the best fighters on earth, as Garbrandt noted and is a guy who hasn’t lost in nearly 10 years. If “No Love” wins, there’s no doubt he’ll be in the “FOTY” discussion. Michael Bisping is also a strong contender, as not too many people were predicting he’d be the middleweight champ as the year closed out.
