Not long after Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Michael Johnson at UFC 205, the lightweight contender said he won’t be fighting for the UFC, unless he gets a title shot next. But, based off comments his father has reportedly made, it sounds like they may be adjusting their stance.

Nurmagomedov has been campaigning for a title shot for some time, and since his win at UFC 205, he’s been extremely vocal about his desire to fight for the belt. To that end, Nurmagomedov has said he’ll “smash” Conor McGregor.

But, now it’s been revealed that the expecting father McGregor, likely won’t fight again until May, 2017 at the earliest. As a result, Nurmagomedov’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, recently told MMA News.info this (quote via Bloody Elbow – translation via Magomed Edilsultanov ):

“We will not wait longer than 3 months,” Abdulmanap said. “We’ll wait for 3 months and at the 4th, we need an opponent. Let them give us any opponent. Even at 77kgs (welterweight).”

“At this moment, it is better to fight with (Tony) Ferguson,” his father added, after he was asked if a fight with Donald Cerrone interests them. “Just to nail this thing down.”

There you have it. All things considered, this makes a lot of sense. If McGregor isn’t planning to fight for five, six months, then  moving forward with Nurmagomedov – Ferguson seems like the right move no? Especially since Nurmagomedov has missed so much time in recent years due to knee injuries.
