Following Gegard Mousasi’s impressive win over Uriah Hall this past weekend, there’s been talk about him fighting Luke Rockhold next, but the latter’s more interested in facing “Jacare” Souza.
Originally, November was set up to be a middleweight tourney of sorts. Yoel Romero and Chris Weidman were booked to throw down at UFC 205, while Souza and Rockhold were scheduled to fight at UFC FN 101 next weekend. The expectation was that whomever emerged with the most impressive win, would be tapped to fight middleweight champ Michael Bisping.
But, Rockhold was forced to withdraw from next weekend’s event due to a knee injury, and since then, Romero finished Weidman with a flying knee at UFC 205. As a result, the UFC is already working on Bisping – Romero for next spring.
Well, Rockhold was a guest on the latest “Submission Radio“, and the former champ revealed that he hopes to return next March. In addition, the American had this to say about his next opponent (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“If I have a guaranteed title shot to fight Mousasi then I’d love to but I’m not looking to fight the next guy – fight Mousai and then have Jacare try to jump me for that shot… I have a lot of respect for Mousasi but I want to get right back at it. I want my title shot…Jacare’s the most clear cut way back to the title. I’m not looking to fight another guy and have there be a question mark about who gets the next shot. I’m gonna go straight down the throat. I’m gonna get Jacare, finish my business with Jacare, and make no ifs, ands, or buts who’s the next in line to get that shot, whether it’s Bisping or Yoel.”
It will be interesting to see what comes next here. After Rockhold withdrew from UFC FN 101, Souza’s camp announced they would only accept a fight with Bisping next. Mousasi has already said that he’d be interested in fighting Rockhold, as a means to secure a title shot.
