That coach is Mark Henry, who in the past, has been critical of McGregor and has accused the two division champ of avoiding wrestlers like Frankie Edgar. But, following McGregor’s second round stoppage win over Alvarez, Henry is praising the striking skills of the Irish fighter.
“You cannot teach somebody how to swing like that,” Henry said. “It takes hips, it takes a certain shoulder, it takes a flick of the wrist, there are so many tiny mechanics. What it takes to make an eyeball work is what it takes to make the perfect swing. Like Babe Ruth. I just compare Conor – his swing – to Babe Ruth…”
“It comes along once in a lifetime or once every hundred years or what not. I think God has just blessed him with a swing that I’ll probably never see again. Before this fight, I would highly doubt him fighting Mayweather, but I think this dude can take out Mayweather. I’m not even joking.”
Now sure, a lot of hardcore fans are tired of all the McGregor – Mayweather talk, as the chances of that happening are slim. But, to see Henry heaping praise like this on the boxing of McGregor is pretty remarkable. Henry definitely knows a thing or two about striking.
All this aside, it’s going to be fascinating to see what comes next for McGregor and Alvarez.
