Following Tony Ferguson’s impressive, decision win over Rafael dos Anjos last night at UFC FN 98, it’s pretty hard to deny that he deserves a title shot. But, “El Cucuy” doesn’t appear to be in any big rush to fight for the 155 belt.
Ferguson bested dos Anjos in many of the headliner’s striking exchanges, and by the end, RDA was all bloodied up. The former lightweight champ landed some telling strikes as well, but Ferguson never appeared to be in any danger and earned the UD win.
Well, since Ferguson has won nine straight fights now, and because he’s defeated RDA, there’s going to be more talk than ever about him fighting for the title. But, after last night’s card, Ferguson had this to say about that very subject (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“If I wanted the title, I would have already had it,” Ferguson said. “I wanted to pick this division apart, one by one…”
“When I get to that title, it will be my title, and it will by my fight. Not because I talked my way to get there, or because I have a big-ass following. I don’t care. I’m here for a reason. I’m here to win.”
Alrighty. Now, no one can deny that Ferguson has earned a shot at the belt. But, depending on what goes down at UFC 205, Ferguson might not be next in line anyways.
If Khabib Nurmagomedov defeats Michael Johnson, then “The Eagle” will likely (should) face the winner of Eddie Alvarez – Conor McGregor. That would mean Nurmagmedov has won 24 straight bouts…
UFC 205 goes down next weekend in NYC on November 12th.
