Junior dos Santos Says Title Fight With Stipe Miocic “Makes The Most Sense”

Junior dos Santos isn’t too far removed from a stoppage loss to Alistair Overeem, but “Cigano” believes a title fight with heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic is in order…

Dos Santos returned to the win column this past April, by outscoring Ben Rothwell for the unanimous decision win. Prior to that, dos Santos was taken out by Alistair Overeem.

Recently the former heavyweight champ spoke to Combate, and while discussing his next bout, JDS stated this (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):

“The fight that makes the most sense now is a Miocic rematch,” dos Santos said. “I was the last one to beat him, so nothing’s fairer than that. Besides, I defeated a guy who was very qualified in my last outing, Ben Rothwell. Everyone was saying he could get a title shot if he got past me. I fit perfectly in a title shot right now. It makes total sense. Velasquez could get a shot, sure, but he’s scheduled to fight Werdum, so it won’t happen now. My fight against Miocic was really tough. I think everyone would like to see it again.”

JDS decisioned Miocic back in 2014, in what was an extremely entertaining war. So ya, a lot of folks would like to see that fight go down once again.

But, at the end of the day, JDS has dropped two of his last four fights, and has the aforementioned Werdum and Velasquez ahead of him in the ranks. So, it’s hard to imagine the UFC moving ahead with Miocic – JDS II right now. Then again, if Miocic requested it, maybe they would book it?

Velasquez – Werdum II, meanwhile, is scheduled for UFC 207, December 30th.
