Lorenz Larkin on Why Conor McGregor’s Striking “Doesn’t Really Impress Me”

Lorenz Larkin

The striking game of Conor McGregor has been praised by plenty of fans and pundits since he’s arrived in the UFC, but clearly Lorenz Larkin isn’t one of those folks.

When people talk about the abilities of McGregor, typically his striking is what gets noted, in terms of why he’s been so successful to date. More specifically, the featherweight champ’s boxing and booming left hand will get mentioned. Depending on the person, they may mention McGregor’s Karate background and his spinning kick attacks.

Well, recently Larkin appeared on BJ Penn.com’s “Rapid Fire”, and the welterweight had this to say about the Irish star’s striking:

“To tell you the truth. Conor McGregor doesn’t really impress me. As far as his style and striking goes. To me he was just a 145-pounder that was big for the division. Don’t get me wrong he has accuracy. Which really is key to him. But I don’t know man. He’s not really a kicker. His striking is really just his hands. I don’t feel like he’s that great. Conor is not an all around striker. If you get what I am saying, his strongest point is that he is really accurate when he punches. I feel like because he was a big 145-pounder that was his key. He was able to hit guys on the button and put those guys down. I’m curious to see how he does against Eddie Alvarez.”

What say you McGregor fans? There’s no doubt that McGregor is a big 145 pounder, and that he’s accurate with his punches. Just ask Jose Aldo.

Now, it’s worth noting that the stand-up skills of Mr. Larkin have also received plenty of praise over the years. Case in point, in Larkin’s last bout his nasty striking was on display, as he quickly took out Neil Magny . That fight was the last on Larkin’s UFC deal, and the Strikeforce vet has decided to test the free agent waters.

McGregor, meanwhile, will challenge lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, November 12th.
