It looks like Cody Garbrandt, and not TJ Dillashaw, has won the campaign to challenge bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz next.
MMA Fighting.com is reporting that sources have informed the outlet that the UFC is trying to sign Cruz vs. Garbrandt for the December 30th, UFC 207 card in Las Vegas. In addition, according to a report from MMA Junkie.com, Torque Sports & Performance, which was started by Garbrandt’s teammate Urijah Faber and sponsors the fighter, announced the bout on Instagram but then deleted the post.
So, this news shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise. Garbrandt (10-0) has taken out Thomas Almeida and Takeya Mizugaki in his last two outings and is 5-0 in the UFC. Although “No Love” is ranked #6, in comparison to the #1 positioned Dillashaw, there is a lot of buzz behind Cruz – Garbrandt.
Cruz (22-1) is coming off a clear cut, decision win over the aforementioned Faber, which followed his split decision victory over Dillashaw in January.
UFC 207 will feature a bantamweight fight between champion Amanda Nunes and Ronda Rousey in the main event.
