Bektic took on Russell Doane at UFC 204 last weekend, and scored a first round, submission win. The bout moved Bektic’s overall record to 11-0 and further entrenched his status as one of the promotion’s top prospects and rising featherweights.
After the bout, the 35 year-old Bektic made it clear that he wants to start fighting top ten ranked fighters. While discussing the division’s champ, Mr. McGregor, Bektic said this (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“(I’ll fight McGregor) if he’s there. I’m not sure what his plans are. He won the featherweight belt, and it’s been a long time, and he hasn’t defended it. I don’t even know how long it’s been since he fought at featherweight. I would beat him now. I’d beat anybody.”
Now, considering Bektic hasn’t faced any top contenders yet in the Octagon, these comments will be met with some skepticism. But, it’s certainly clear that the American Top Team fighter is definitely someone to keep tabs on at 145. Heading into UFC 204 Bektic was rankde #15, so maybe he will get his wish, and will face a top ten ranked opponent next.
In addition to Doane, Bektic has defeated Chas Skelly, Lucas Martins and Paul Redmon since joining the UFC in 2014.
