Following a controversial ending to their first meeting in February, light heavyweights Stephan Bonnar and Krzysztof Soszynski are set to meet again at UFC 116 on July 3 in Las Vegas, Bonnar recently told MMAFighting.
Bonnar and Soszynski met on the preliminary card of last month’s UFC 110 in Sydney, Australia, but after two close rounds an accidental headbutt in the final frame gashed Bonnar and forced the fight to be stopped. While replays clearly showed the foul causing the cut, the fight’s referee ruled Soszynski cut Bonnar with a punch and improperly declared him the winner by third-round TKO.
After the fight, both Bonnar and Soszynski said they were interested in a rematch, which was rumored to be in the works for The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale on June 19, but has instead been signed for UFC 116, which is headlined by the return of heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar vs. interim title-holder Shane Carwin.
After back-to-back wins in 2007, The Ultimate Fighter 1 runner-up Bonnar (11-7) has dropped three-straight, including previous losses to Jon Jones and Mark Coleman, while Soszynski (19-9-1), a cast member on TUF 8, has gone 4-1 in the UFC with wins over Shane Primm, Brian Stann, and Andre Gusmao, as well as a loss to Brandon Vera.
