There was no shortage of fans who were disappointed to hear that Donald Cerrone won’t scrap Robbie Lawler at UFC 205, but the latter’s teammate thinks the former champ made the right call.

Originally, it was announced that Cerrone and Lawler would throw down at the November 12th event in New York City, But, not long after, it was confirmed that Lawler decided he needed more time to prepare for the fight, following his KO loss to Tyron Woodley in July.

Recently Lawler’s teammate at American Top Team, “King Mo” Lawal, appeared on “The MMA Hour”. While discussing Lawler’s withdrawal from UFC 205, the Bellator star stated (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“It’s like this, personally, me, I think that Robbie shouldn’t fight until December or January,” Lawal said. “Take time off, because these past two years, man, at the gym, Robbie’s been going to the max. Take some time to recharge, because Cerrone is a good fighter, it’s a great fight for the fans — why rush it? Cerrone ain’t going nowhere. Cerrone is always in shape, always ready. So once Robbie recharges, if Cerrone wants to fight Robbie, then they can fight.”

No one should be arguing with Lawal on this. Lawler knows his body best, and if he feels he needs more time, then it would be ridiculous to criticize him. Yes, the former champ’s only fought three times since 2014, but his bouts with Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit were wars. It should also be noted that “Ruthless” fought four times in 2014, and three of those bouts went the distance. In addition, Lawler dealt with concussion issues earlier in his career.

Here’s hoping Lawler – Cerrone can get booked for some time in 2017.
