Dodson and Lineker went at it for five, action packed rounds in last night’s headliner, and after the bout, Lineker was awarded the split decision win. All three judges scored the fight 48-47, but only one saw it going Dodson’s way.
As everyone expected, since both men are heavy handed fighters, the bout was largely a kickboxing contest. Lineker pressured Dodson throughout most of the fight, while the latter circled away and looked to counterstrike. By the end of the fight, Lineker did have some swelling by his right eye, which prompted Dodson to say this about the decision (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I still look handsome as hell,” Dodson said. “He came out looking like Frankenstein, so I don’t know what’s up.”
“I was like, ‘What the hell are y’all thinking?’” Dodson added, while commenting on the judge’s ruling. “I didn’t know you could make someone miss so many times and still be on the losing end.”
If you look at what Fight Metric tallied for the fight, in terms of striking, then you can see why Dodson’s upset. According to the system, Dodson landed 52% of his significant strikes while Lineker only scored with 28% of his. It should also be noted, however, that Dodson went 0 for 6 on takedowns.
All this aside, it will be interesting to see what comes next for Lineker, who was ranked #3 in the 135 division heading into the bout. If the UFC elects to hand TJ Dillashaw the next title shot, how about Lineker vs. Cody Garbrandt?
