Stephens was in attendance, since he’s booked to face fellow featherweight contender Frankie Edgar at the November 12th card. McGregor, as you surely know, is going to challenge lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez in the headliner.
At one point of the McGregor dominated even, the featherweight champ was asked about who would be his toughest test, following the Alvarez bout. Before McGregor could respond, Stephens jumped in and said he would be.
Well, McGregor proceeded to ask “who the f–k is this guy?”. Although Stephens argued the Irish star knows “exactly” who he is, his response was kind of drowned out by laughs. Following the event, Stephens spoke with Brian Stann on his Siriux XM show, and the powerful striker said this (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“When we got into it, it is what it is. He knows exactly who I am. I’ve fought on his cards before and had some nasty knockouts. It’s only a matter of time but right now my 100% focus is on Frankie Edgar. An exciting win, a great knockout, a highlight win puts me right in the mix for that title shot. You never know, there could be some injuries or whatnot and I’d gladly be the guy to step up and put on a show for the New York fans.”
According to the aforementioned report, Stephens has fought alongside McGregor twice. At UFC 189 when he took out Dennis Bermudez with a flying knee, and at UFC 194 when he was decisioned by Max Holloway. But does McGregor know who he is? Chances are yes.
