The TUF vet cracked Poirier with a right and left hook not long into the bout, and a second or two later, the fight was done. Since Poirier had won four straight, since he moved to lightweight last year, there was a ton of hype behind “The Diamond”. In fact, Johnson, who was coming off two decision losses, was the underdog leading into the bout.
Well, there’s no doubt that some people picked Johnson to win, but chances are, not too many predicted he KO Poirier in less than two minutes. During his post-fight, backstage interview, “The Menace” had this to say about the quick outing:
“He landed one shot, but you know, I think he was really nervous,” said Johnson. “I think he went in there scared. I felt that. I could see it in his eyes, and when we started trading punches, it always felt like I was two, three steps ahead of him. He left his head in there a little bit long and I landed with my two punches. I even think he was out with the first hook I hit him with…”
Whether Poirier was nervous or not, it was a huge win for Johnson. Poirier was ranked #7 prior the card, and Johnson was #10, so the latter is likely heading up in the standings.
Johnson also apologized for taunting Poirier after the fight, and said “I’m better than that”. The lightweight said he was amped up by Poirier’s recent claims that Johnson has a big ego.
UFC FN 94 went down in Hidalgo, Texas.
