Conor McGregor has repeatedly said he intends to compete in the UFC’s 155 division at some juncture, so is Dustin Poirier thinking about avenging his loss to the featherweight champ? Yes and no.
Since Poirier was taken out by McGregor in 2014, “The Diamond” has moved up to lightweight and rattled off four consecutive wins. This Saturday, at UFC Fight Night 94, he’ll throw hands with fellow contender, Michael Johnson.
In advance of the bout, Poirier appeared on the latest “UFC Tonight“. The noted finisher was, not surprisingly, asked whether he’d like to face McGregor again, if indeed, the latter moves to 155 (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“My goal isn’t to avenge losses,” said Poirier. “My goal is the title and if he’s there, what a great Cinderella story that would be.”
Yes indeed. First things first, however, and that’s Johnson, who due to his boxing and wrestling, is a tough out for any 155’er. When asked for this take on Johnson, however, Poirier said this:
“He’s a strong-willed fighter. He sticks to the game plan and executes. I don’t think he’s great anywhere – I’ll outclass him everywhere.”
It will be interesting to see how that bout plays out. No question. If Poirier wins, he could move into the title shot mix.
UFC FN 94 will go down in Hidalgo, Texas.
