Daniel Cormier gets that a bout between Jon Jones and Anthony Johnson would determine the UFC’s #1 contender at 205. But having the interim title on the line? Well, the champion is having a lot of trouble wrapping his head around that.
Following Johnson’s emphatic, KO win over Glover Teixeira last month, the consensus was that “Rumble” would square off with Cormier in the not too distant future. But, since it looks like Jones could return from his USADA flag a lot sooner than expected, Cormier – Johnson II might not happen just yet (Cormier submitted Johnson last May to become the light-heavyweight champ).
Further, UFC boss man Dana White has said that he’d like to see Jones face Johnson. Not only that, but White also relayed that the bout could be for the interim title, which Jones won this past April, by earning a UD win over Ovince Saint Preux. Well, Cormier recently appeared on Toe-2-Toe on SiriusXM Rush with Brian Stann, and he had this to say about that idea (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“Now one thing I completely disagree with, completely – and I don’t care who hears it – why in the hell would Jon still be the interim champion? That makes no sense. That makes absolutely no sense. They should not be fighting for an interim championship. That makes no sense at all. I don’t even know why he would still be the interim champion. His ass was disqualified. Take that freakin’ belt off of him. That’s stupid.
“I hope to God Dana misspoke, because that makes absolutely no sense. They aren’t fighting for some interim title if they fight. They can fight in the main event because it’s a big fight but it’s a fun fight. If they fight, they fight to determine the number one contender it’s not some interim championship fight. That makes no sense at all… You’d have an interim champion defending the interim championship while the actual champion is actually still there. That makes no sense whatsoever.”
Cormier’s point about him being an active champ is a good one. After all, Cormier was ready to go at UFC 200, and he even defeated Anderson Silva that night (in a non-title affair). So, considering everything that’s gone down, the UFC could certainly get away with announcing the interim title is no longer in the picture no?
