Stipe Miocic had a rough start to his first title defense tonight at UFC 203, but the heavyweight champ came back to take out Alistair Overeem.
Overeem stung Miocic with a left hand not long into the bout, and sent the champion momentarily to the deck. Miocic got back to his feet, however, and continued to pursue the decorated vet. After taking him to the mat, Miocic proceeded to knock Overeem out with punches from above. After the fight, Overeem argued that Miocic had tapped to a guillotine choke he went for, after he dropped Miocic. The replay, however, didn’t appear to show that was the case.
In the co-main event, Fabricio Werdum struck his way to a unanimous decision win over Travis Browne. The bout wasn’t without controversy, however, as in round one, Browne stopped the action due to an apparent hand injury. Browne was allowed to continue, however, despite the fact the referee didn’t halt the action.
UFC 203 also featured the MMA debut of former pro-wrestling star, CM Punk. As many believed would be the case, Punk was outclassed by the rising fighter, who promptly took him to the ground and submitted hime with a rear-naked-choke.
