A lot of people believe CM Punk will be in way over his head next Saturday when he takes on Mickey Gall, but apparently Renzo Gracie isn’t one of those folks.
Although Punk has been training for his MMA debut out of the renowned Roufusport Gym in Milwaukee, the former pro-wrestling is a sizeable underdog heading into UFC 203. After all, Gall has gone 2-0 in pro MMA, and he also has some amateur bouts under his belt. Not only that, but Gall has drawn praise for what he’s showcased in the cage thus far.
Well, recently the legendary Gracie spoke to Sirius XM Rush, and he was asked to weigh-in on Punk’s transition into MMA. Here is some of what the jiu-jitsu black belt had to say (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):
“I love the guy. I love CM Punk. He’s a great guy, and he’s a very tough guy,” Gracie said. “He trained for a long time with my cousins in Los Angeles, and now he’s training with Duke Roufus. For sure he will represent well this sport. I can’t wait to see his debut.”
“He’s going to be against a tough guy, but I think he has a big chance to win,” he said. “(I think he wins) with a guillotine. I believe, second round.”
How about that? Now, one could certainly conclude from this that Gracie’s been told by his cousins that Punk is pretty slick on the mats? And further, that he has a nasty guillotine?
We shall see on Saturday night. UFC 203 will go down in Cleveland, Ohio. In the headliner, heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic will take on Alistair Overeem.
