In recent weeks, White has continued to say that St-Pierre isn’t going to come back to the UFC, even though the latter has made it clear he wants to. In a more recent interview, White even argued that GSP shouldn’t return, since he “doesn’t have that ‘I want to be a world champion’ attitude anymore.”
Well, St-Pierre was asked to respond to White’s comments on Wednesday’s “UFC Tonight“, and here is what the former welterweight champ had to say (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“He doesn’t know anything about me. I’m a smart person. Let me fight once and you’ll see in the first minute of the first fight it’s all wrong. Let me fight Tyron Woodley and he’ll see. I’m not angry at him. It’s like a game. Let me fight once and you’ll see in first minute.”
How about? St-Pierre says he’s not angry but he sounds pretty fired up no?
White’s comments have certainly raised eyebrows throughout the game. Is it White’s way of motivating GSP? And taking control of the narrative surrounding his imminent return? So that St-Pierre remains open to a title run?
Or, are the comments somehow tied to the ongoing negotiations between the UFC and St-Pierre’s team? The latter has said he will not return unless he’s compensated for the sponsorship money he’ll lose on account of the Reebok deal.
It’s going to be a fascinating time if and when GSP returns.
