Increasingly it’s looking like Jon Jones will be available to fight much sooner than expected, but Daniel Cormier says he has no intention of fighting his rival next.
Unless you’re a brand new, MMA fan, then you know that Jones was scheduled to rematch Cormier at UFC 200. But the former 205 champ was flagged by USADA, and the fight was cancelled just days out from the July 9th card. More recently, however, Jones has reported that he’s received some “good news”, and that he expects to be back in the Octagon “soon”.
This past weekend at UFC 202, however, Anthony Johnson wrecked Glover Teixeira, and as a result, a lot of folks are calling for him to face Cormier next. On the latest “UFC Tonight”, Cormier was asked to weigh-in on the situation, and the champ said this about Jones:
Here is some of what “DC” had to say about Jones (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I’m not fighting him right now,” Cormier said. “I’m to not going to fight him after everything that went down at UFC 200. I feel burned. I’ve been burned by him on multiple occasions. … It has worn on me. For two years, I’ve lived under this cloud, and every time that I fight Jon, it’s so much negativity. So if I can get away from that and distance myself from it for a little bit, then I’ll roll back around to it.”
Cormier went on to say that he thinks he should be fighting Johnson next, and noted that Jones has not be cleared yet to fight. So, who knows, maybe we will see Cormier – Johnson II?
