Carlos Condit didn’t get another crack the UFC’s 170 belt like he was hoping for, but “The Natural Born Killer” believes he did secure a bout that should lead to a title shot…
Condit will take on fellow contender Demian Maia at UFC on FOX 21 on Saturday night, which will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia. The fight comes months after Condit dropped a razor thin, split decision loss to Robbie Lawler in January, who was the champ at the time.
After the defeat, Condit campaigned for an immediate rematch with Lawler. For a while, the former WEC champ even said that the only bout that could pull him back into the Octagon, was another scrap with “Ruthless”.
Well, obviously Condit changed his mind regarding that, but clearly securing another shot at the belt is why he agreed to face Mr. Maia. The Jackson-Wink MMA fighter appeared on the latest “UFC Tonight” on Wednesday, and while doing so, Condit had this to say (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“I didn’t get the shot, but I still want to fight and I feel a win over Maia puts me right back in title contention.”
“I do”, said Condit, when asked if he believes a win over Maia should lead to a championship fight. “I felt like I deserved it after the Lawler fight. To beat a guy who’s on a run like Maia has been on, would get me the shot.”
There’s no question that Maia has been on a ridiculously impressive run, and since he’s currently ranked #3, a win for Condit would put him in the title shot mix. But with Stephen Thompson waiting for his crack at the champ Tyron Woodley, and Georges St-Pierre also waiting in the wings, neither Maia or Condit could be next.
