Eddie Alvarez took out Rafael dos Anjos in the opening round, and has hoisted both the Bellator and UFC’s lightweight belt, but is Conor McGregor impressed by the new champ? Will Stockton be rooting for the Irish star this Saturday?
Since Alvarez ended the reign of RDA, the rugged vet has been angling for a bout with the winner of Nate Diaz – McGregor II. In addition, Alvarez has let it be known that he doesn’t think much of McGregor, and has argued the featherweight champ’s been ducking well rounded, opponents.
McGregor appeared on the latest “MMA Hour” on Monday, in advance of UFC 202, and of course, he was asked about his future. Here is some of what the outspoken fighter had to say about Mr. Alvarez (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“Right now there’s a new champion, he’s a bum as well,” McGregor said. “He’s a novice. He’s a novice on his feet, swinging shots, overhands. He just is a wrestler with an overhand as well. They’re novices where I come from and that’s the truth of it, so we’ll see about him. We’ll see.”
It’s going to be interesting to see what Alvarez does with those comments…
McGregor was also asked about Jose Aldo, who now holds the interim 145 belt, and will face his rival again, if, and that’s the key word, if he returns to featherweight. Once again, McGregor stopped short of committing to the bout, as he reported he’s not really “intrigued” with a rematch at this time.
UFC 202 will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this Saturday.
