Demetrious Johnson has been doing just fine competing under MMA’s unified rules, but the flyweight champ recently reported he’s a fan of PRIDE’s.
Now, if you’re an old school fan, or a new fan that’s been busy on UFC Fight Pass, then you know that PRIDE’s rules were pretty different than the UFC’s. For example, the first round was 10 minutes, not five, and soccer kicks and stomps to the head of a downed opponent were allowed.
Well, recently Johnson attended a Q&A fan session in advance of UFC FN 92, and “Mighty Mouse” had this to say about PRIDE’s rules (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I’d rather have head stomps and kicks to the head on the ground rather than elbows because I think to kick someone in the head while they’re laying on their back is very hard,” said Johnson, while discussing the recent change to the unified rules, whereby a fighter must have two palms on the canvas to be considered down. “Elbows are easy. You can be here and I just cut you and won the fight.”
“That’s one of the things I loved about PRIDE, the first round was ten minutes,” Johnson said. “A lot of (expletive) can happen in ten minutes. Then the second round would happen, you have another five minutes. Then the third round would happen, you have another five minutes. That’s why I liked the PRIDE rules.”
Johnson isn’t the only fan and or fighter who feels this way. In a perfect world, it would be nice if the rules could be negotiated no? For example, how much different would Nate Diaz – Conor McGregor look on Saturday, if the first round was 10 minutes?
Johnson, meanwhile, has yet to be booked for his next fight after taking out Henry Cejudo in April.
