Fans and pundits have speculated and debated how a bout between Jon Jones and Anthony Johnson would go down, but according to the latter, the fight’s not going to happen…
Johnson and Jones were supposed to fight last May, but “Bones” was arrested on hit-and-run charges and didn’t fight again until this past April. Now, more recently, Jones was pulled from a July 9th rematch with Daniel Cormier, after reportedly testing positive for estrogen blockers. If the former 205 champ can’t launch a successful appeal, Jones could be suspended until 2018.
Well, recently Johnson spoke with ESPN.com, in advance of his August 20th bout with Glover Teixeira. While discussing Jones, and whether he’ll ever cross paths with the renowned fighter, “Rumble” said this:
“It’s just not gonna happen — at this point, I know it’s not gonna happen,” Johnson said. “It is what it is. I’m moving forward. Everybody is moving forward. I’m still shooting high and trying to do what I can in this sport. I’m not focused on Jon anymore. And I can tell you Daniel Cormier, Glover — they’re not focused on Jon, either. Nobody in this division is focused on Jon anymore. That’s a fact.”
Now, since Johnson is just 32 year’s old, one might think the heavy handed fighter is just saying this, and doesn’t really believe it. After all, Johnson could still, in theory, fight Jones after he finishes his suspension right? If that happens?
Well, Johnson proceeded to say in the interview that “I ain’t trying to fight until I’m 35″. So, ya. If that’s the case, then you can kind of understand why Johnson doesn’t think he’ll ever face the man, who many believe, is the greatest fighter on the planet.
UFC 202 will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
