So Dana White Says Stephen Thompson’s Getting Title Shot…

Stephen Thompson

Tyron Woodley has said several times that he’s not fighting Stephen Thompson next, but it looks like Dana White and the UFC have other ideas.

Woodley grabbed the 170 title last month, by taking out Robbie Lawler in the opening round. Leading up to the bout, Thompson argued that he should have been fighting for the title. He also predicted that Lawler would win. Well, Woodley didn’t care for the comments, and as a result, he’s argued Thompson should go fight the former champ, and not him. Woodley’s also called for fights with Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre.

White recently spoke with UFC.com, however, and in the interview, he had this to say about Thompson, as well as featherweight champ, Conor McGregor.

“I fully expect Conor to come back and defend his 145-pound title,” White said. “I think that Nate feels his brother should have the fight at 170, but Nick is not going to come back and fight for the title right away.

“There are other guys deserving of a title shot. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is going to fight for the 170-pound title and then we’ll see what happens with Nick and Nate.”

There you have it. Really, considering GSP hasn’t reached a new deal with the UFC, and because he just recently resumed USADA testing, Woodley – Thompson makes sense.

McGregor, meanwhile, is booked to rematch Nate Diaz in a welterweight contest on August 20th. Recently the featherweight champ stopped short of saying he was returning to 145 to face interim champ, Jose Aldo. So, it remains to be seen whether the Irish star in fact returns to featherweight after UFC 202.
