Since Alvarez took out Rafael dos Anjos last month to take the UFC’s 155 title, the outspoken fighter has said he wants to face the winner of Nate Diaz – Conor McGregor II. Even before Alvarez defeated RDA, the former Bellator champ relayed that he wasn’t overly impressed with McGregor, and questioned whether he can hang with well rounded, competition.
Well, recently Alvarez appeared on CBS Sports Radio’s Tiki and Tierney, and while doing so, he said this about McGregor:
“I don’t know him personally, but thank God he’s good at talking because he can’t fight for (expletive),” Alvarez said. “Look, in this sport – the good thing about the UFC and MMA in general is a lot of it’s based on perception. They’re very good at tweaking this perception. If I can put the right guy with the right mouthpiece in front of the right opponents, we can build a champion, but he doesn’t really have to beat the best guys; we just have to give him the right match-ups. This is what this guy’s been given. Any real fighter, anybody who knows the sport of MMA, sees the style match-ups that he picks and understands this guy is not putting himself in any danger. He’s not fighting anyone who he feels he can lose to.”
There you have it. But what about the fact McGregor’s fighting Diaz again? Who submitted him in March? Alvarez proceeded to state that Diaz doesn’t kick, or shoot takedowns, and that in fact, he does “everything Conor wants to do.”
It will be interesting to see what’s next for Alvarez. Obviously he’s campaigning hard for a big fight with either Diaz or McGregor, but it seems like the UFC’s positioning to hand Khabib Nurmagomedov a title shot.
The Diaz – McGregor headlined UFC 202 will take place on August 20th.
