Tyron Woodley Still Insists That Stephen Thompson Isn’t Next…

Although some fans and observers are piling on Tyron Woodley, for the stance he’s taken on fighting Stephen Thompson, the new welterweight champ isn’t backing off.

If you’ve been following the UFC’s 170, title shot picture, then you know that Thompson has been driving hard for a crack at the belt. Following his sensational, stoppage win over Johny Hendricks in February, Thompson argued he, and not Woodley, should fight for the belt next. The vaunted striker, who went on to defeat Rory MacDonald in June, also argued that he vs. Lawler made for a better fight. Thompson also predicted that the latter would defeat Woodley.

Well, Woodley proved Thompson wrong with a massive right hand, and since doing so, he’s made it clear he doesn’t want to fight “Wonderboy” next. Although some fans are annoyed / angry with Woodley as a result, recently the powerful wrestler said this on the latest “UFC Tonight” (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):

“He (Thompson) said he wanted the Robbie fight. He said that’s the better fight. And he thought Robbie was going to win. If I’m talking to Georges St-Pierre and he’s interested in fighting me, that’s the fight I want. I’m not going to fight Stephen.”

Well, Woodley’s certainly standing by his initial stance huh? Now does this mean he won’t in fact end up fighting Thompson next? No.

If the UFC can’t come to an agreement with GSP anytime soon, then it’s hard to imagine the UFC going with someone else, other than Thompson. Yes, people would like to see Woodley – Nick Diaz, and the new champ also called for that fight, but that bout likely isn’t going to happen. Diaz clearly wants big money for that fight, and he would be receiving a title shot, having gone winless in three straight bouts.
