Georges St. Pierre

Chances are Stephen Thompson isn’t going to be a happy camper today, as it’s being reported that Georges St-Pierre is interested in fighting Tyron Woodley…

Woodley is the UFC’s new welterweight champ, thanks to a booming right hand he tagged Robbie Lawler with on Saturday night. Following the emphatic victory, Woodley said he wants to fight either Nick Diaz or GSP next.  Thompson, who is the #1 contender, has been campaigning for a title shot hard.

Well, MMA Fighting.com’s Ariel Helwani reached out to GSP via text, and the former champ reportedly said he’s interested in fighting Woodley. When asked if he ‘wants’ that fight, the response was the same…

So, ya. One would think the UFC would give GSP a title shot if he wants one. Dana White has said in the past that they would grant GSP a title shot, if he returned.

Now, before we all start writing up invites for Woodley – St-Pierre viewing bashes, some hurdles remain. GSP has said in recent weeks that he wants to fight again, but, the Canadian star wants a new contract. Due to the UFC’s uniform deal with Reebok, St-Pierre has said he loses out on cash. So, his team wants to renegotiate his current contract. That could take some time.

That aside, this would be a win-win for the UFC. If GSP takes back the title, then it will be a terrific comeback story and sets the table for some huge, huge fights. If Woodley can defeat one of the biggest names ever in MMA, however, then it would push his status to a new level. Woodley is a big name in MMA circles, but isn’t a mainstream draw yet like Conor McGregor etc.
