The MMA world is buzzing about Tyron Woodley’s KO victory over Robbie Lawler at UFC 201, but Jake Ellenberger also scored an emphatic win on Saturday.
Ellenberger came out guns blazing against Matt Brown, and put the rugged, welterweight contender away with a vicious liver kick. Ellenberger was a sizeable underdog heading into the fight, since the veteran had gone 1-5 in his previous six bouts.
Well, following the event, UFC boss man Dana White revealed the following, while discussing Ellenberger on the post-fight, FOX Sports 1 show (quote via FOX Sports press release):
“He had to,” said White, while discussing the fact Ellenberger was in a must win situation. “We had cut him. He came to Vegas and said, don’t cut him. He said he’d come out and deliver. We put him against Matt Brown and he delivered.”
Delivered he did. Now it will be interesting to see where Ellenberger goes from here. It wasn’t that long ago really, when he was sitting at the top of the welterweight division, and was gunning for a title shot.
It will also be interesting to see what comes next for Brown. The noted finisher has gone 1-4 now in his last five contests, after winning seven straight. Brown was ranked #9 prior to UFC 201.
UFC 201 went down at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
