Stephen Thompson has won seven straight fights and is ranked #1 at 170, but newly crowned champ Tyron Woodley has a different man in mind for his first title defense.
If you caught UFC 201 last night, then your jaw may have been one of the thousands which dropped, when Woodley put away Robbie Lawler in the opening round. Anyone with some substantial knowledge of MMA knew that Woodley was going to be a serious challenge for Lawler, but not too many folks were predicting he KO the rugged fighter in round one.
Well, Woodley is the man now at 170, which is not something Thompson predicted. Leading up to UFC 201, “Wonderboy” said Lawler would defend the title against Woodley, and talked about how he matched up against the now former champ. So, is Woodley eager to face Thompson? Considering everything that went down? Yes and no.
While speaking on the FOX Sports 1, post-fight show, Woodley offered this, when asked who he wants to fight next (quote via FOX Sports press release):
“You said that you wanted to fight Lawler. Now you get the opportunity. Now Nick Diaz is coming off suspension in two days. If he wants to fight on the same card with his brother in August, he can against me. That’s the money fight. Let’s go get it. I’m ready.”
“You’ll get your chance after I make this money [against Diaz].”
Now would that be an awesome addition to UFC 202? Of course. Will it happen? Probably not.
First off, we don’t know if Diaz has been training to fight right away, and UFC 202 is going down on August 20th. Second, even if the UFC wanted to go with that match-up, chances are they would have it headline it’s own card. Three, considering all that Thompson has accomplished lately, it’s hard to imagine him getting past over unless Georges St-Pierre comes back.
