UFC 201: Main Card Play-by-Play and Results

UFC 201

The prelim scraps are over in Atlanta, Georgia, so it’s time to move to the pay-perv-view, main card for UFC 201.

In the main event, welterweight champ Robbie Lawler will be looking to defend the title for a third time, as he’ll face Tyron Woodley.

Ryan Benoit vs. Fredy Serrano

Round 1: Benoit fires in a leg kick and Serrano counters with a big right. Axe kick from Serrano. Body kick from Serrano. Benoit gets taken down off a kick attempt. Benoit scrambles out. Nicely done. Benoit lands a hard straight right and Serrano momentarily goes down. Benoit goes for a standing guillotine; Serrano takes the fight down and moves into sidemount. Benoit gets to his feet. They wing hard punches off the clinch. Nice body kick by Benoit. Serrano telegraphs a shot. Latter misses with an axe kick. Benoit flurries in with some shots and final horn goes. Benoit threw a shot after the horn and Serrano’s upset.

Round 2: Serrano misses with an axe kick. Serrano charges in, pushes Benoit to the cage. They break. Benoit goes for a guillotine but Serrano slams out and is on top. Benoit bumps Serrano off. Fight’s back up. Serrano spins with a head kick that grazes Benoit’s head. Serrano scores the TD. Serrano is firing his hip into the head of Benoit. Interesting. Benoit gets to his feet. Round ends.

Round 3: Serrano takes the fight down again. Serrano lands some punches from above. Ref brings the fight up. Wow. Serrano telegraphs a shot and Benoit winds up on top. Serrano gets to his feet. Serrano fires in a punch to the body. Serrano wings a punch and Benoit counters with a body kick. Serrano shoots in low again and Benoit jumps over it. Nice knee from Benoit. Latter clinches up. Hard right hand from Benoit lands. Benoit whiffs with a right. Final horn goes.

Erik Perez vs. Francisco Rivera

Round 1: Both bantamweights are testing their opponent’s range. Rivera plants a hook. Perez throws a leg kick but eats a hook. Perez goes high with a kick that’s blocked. Perez lands a leg kick. Rivera has a kick caught and Perez nearly takes him down. Perez shoots in but Rivera gets back to his feet. Rivera lands a right but takes a counter. Now they step up their attacks. Round ends.

Round 2: Rivera has a leg kick attempt countered by Perez, with a kick of his own, and he momentarily goes down. Perez comes with a right. Perez spins with a backfist that is blocked. Rivera fires a right that just misses. Perez shoots in but Rivera defends. Perez spins with an elbow. Rivera is cut on the top right of his head. Rivera has a body kick caught but Perez can’t keep him down. Rivera wings a couple of big punches. Nice right from Rivera. Perez hits Rivera low with a kick but the ref didn’t see it. Now Perez gets the TD. Rounds ends.

Round 3: Both men come out firing. Wow. This is crazy. Rivera goes down briefly from eating a shot. They continue to wing big shots. Rivera throws and misses so hard he goes down. Perez is on top. Latter continues to work from the top. Rivera is bleeding quite a bit. Perez is staying busy. Rivera needs to do something fast. Finally Rivera gets back to his feet. Hard inside leg kick by Perez. Final horn goes. That round was ridiculous.

Matt Brown vs. Jake Ellenberger

Round 1: Ellenberger comes out and clocks Brown with a huge right. Brown hits the deck and Ellenberger is firing down shots. Brown is trying to get back to his feet. Another right from Ellenberger. Wow. Brown digs a knee to the body. Brown lands a right. Another right from Brown. Ellenberger expended a lot energy and looks tired. Wow. Huge body kick by Ellenberger and Brown goes down again. That’s it. What a massive victory for Ellenberger!

Karolina Kowalkiewicz  vs. Rose Namajunas

Round 1: Kowalkiewicz sticks a jab. Kowalkiewicz comes with a leg kick. Namajunas just misses with a big right. Latter lands a right. Another right hand from Namajunas lands. Namajunas plants a left.  Namajunas continue to find a home with the right. Kowalkiewicz comes in but takes a counter. Kowalkiewicz spins with a kick. Now she clinches up and lands some knees. Namajunas pulls Kowalkiewicz to the mat but the latter nearly takes her back. Namajunas reverses. Round ends.

Round 2: Kowalkiewicz is pressing forward. Latter clinches up and lands some knees. Both women are working from the clinch. Namajunas is trying to move to the back but Kowalkiewicz defends. Namajunas lands a 1 – 2. Kowalkiewicz with a right hand. Beautiful front kick by Namajunas. Kowalkiewicz defends a TD attempt. Latter sticks a right hand. More clinch work by Kowalkiewicz. Namajunas plants a right. Namajuns looks tired. Round ends.

Round 3: Namajunas just misses with a right. Kowalkiewicz misses with a spinning kick. Latter fires in more knees to the body. Kowalkiewicz misses with a spinning backfist. Kowalkiewicz charges in but Namajunas lands a right. Latter lands a leg kick. They trade shots. Namajunas has a TD stopped. Wow. Kowalkiewicz flurries in and the action spills to the floor. Namajunas goes for an armbar but Kowalkiewicz defends. Shots from Kowalkiewicz. Up kick by Namajunas lands. Kowalkiewicz continues to land shots from the top. Namajunas gets up.They’re chucking punches and the final horn goes. This is Kowalkiewicz’s fight.

Robbie Lawler  vs. Tyron Woodley

Round 1: Neither man has thrown a strike nearly a minute in. Woodley charges in and Lawler misses with a knee. Ref breaks them up after the clinch briefly. Lawler throws a couple of front kicks. Wow. Woodley blasts Lawler with a huge right and he goes down. After a couple more shots the ref stops the action. We have a new welterweight champ folks.
