If you ever run into Robbie Lawler, it might be best if you skip asking him any questions about Conor McGregor…
Last month, Lawler was in Atlanta doing press, in advance of his bout this Saturday with Tyron Woodley. During the segment, Lawler was asked about facing McGregor, and the welterweight champ said Nate Diaz was “nice” to the Irish star. Then, Lawler proceeded to declare he would take McGreogor’s “soul” if they fought.
Well, fast forward to Wednesday, and Lawler appeared on “UFC Tonight”. The American Top Team fighter had this to say about discussing Mr. McGregor (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“An interviewer asked me a question about Conor and it kind of irritated me. I don’t think he should be mentioned with me. I’m not like everyone else. I’m a little different.”
Alrighty. Since Lawler is one of the most terrifying fighters in MMA, it’s probably a good idea to pass on the McGregor questions for the time being.
As it looks right now, it doesn’t appear as though McGregor will be facing Lawler any time soon. Earlier this year there was talk about McGregor getting tapped for a title fight, if he defeated Diaz at UFC 196. That didn’t happen.
McGregor and Diaz are scheduled to fight at UFC 202, August 20th. But even if McGregor wins, no one believes he’ll be fighting for 170 gold. McGregor has said he intends to defend the featherweight title, and many believe a future run at lightweight is far more likely than welterweight.
Of course, Lawler still needs to get by Woodley on Saturday. UFC 201 will be hosted by the Philips Arena in Atlanta.
