Ben Rothwell came up short against Junior dos Santos in April, but the dangerous fighter hasn’t lost faith in his abilities to take out any heavyweight, on any given night.
Rothwell faced JDS at UFC Fight Night 86, and was defeated by the former champ via unanimous decision. Prior to the bout, however, Rothwell had won four straight, and turned heads by taking out the likes of Alistair Overeem, Matt Mitrione and Josh Barnett.
Up next, Rothwell will take on former champ Fabricio Werdum at UFC 203 on September 10th. While discussing the upcoming bout and what’s on the line, Rothwell recently said this (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I know that I can defeat any heavyweight on the planet,” Rothwell said. “That’s it right now.”
“I think I have a great opportunity to prove (I’m the No. 1 contender),” Rothwell added. “I know that’s what (Werdum) is taking the fight for, and we’re the co-main event to the heavyweight title fight, and the challenger I’ve already knocked out, and the current champion wasn’t able to fight me in October because he pulled out against me, so I feel there’s already history there. There’s a guy or so that’s obviously in the line. I think it’s about performance, and I think Sept. 10, a challenger for the title will emerge.”
When you consider how hard Rothwell hits, and the nasty chokes he possesses, there’s no doubt he can finish pretty much any heavyweight. But, against dos Santos, Rothwell was unable to get himself in a position often enough to score a stoppage. Can he do so against Werdum? An athletic heavyweight who also has a ton of finishing tools?
UFC 203 will go down in Cleveland, Ohio. In the main event, heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic will take on Alistair Overeem.
