Stephan Bonnar Loses Appeal of UFC 110 Loss to Krzysztof Soszynski

Stephan BonnarStephan Bonnar’s controversial loss to fellow light heavyweight Krzysztof Soszyski at UFC 110 will stand, after Bonnar’s appeal of the loss was recently turned down.

“A review was held … and the Combat Sports Authority of NSW did not seek to interfere with the referee’s decision,” Craig Waller, the Executive Director of the Combat Sports Authority of New South Wales, which oversaw the event, today told MMAjunkie.com.

Bonnar and Soszynski accidentally clashed heads early in the third round of the bout, and a resulting gash on Bonnar’s forehead forced the fight to be stopped. However, the referee incorrectly ruled that a legal strike from Soszynski caused the cut and declared him the winner by TKO, rather than going to the judges for a decision or ruling it a no contest.

They are now expected to rematch at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale on June 19 in Las Vegas.

    Jesus.
Stephan Bonnar just cannot catch a break, which has got to be messing with his head by this point.
I just hope the guy stays strong and settles his issue with Soczynski at the TUF 11 finale.
Also, if the UFC is thinking of going back to Australia, it might be in everyone’s best interests to set up some sort of MMA tutorial for both their refs and their combat sports authority members, so that not only do they have a better handle on what they are looking at and presiding over when the UFc comes to town, but they know how to fix an obvious error when one was made…

Without digging up this commission’s rules, it’s entirely possible they can’t overturn the decision. Since the referee didn’t incorrectly interpret a rule, he only incorrectly interpreted how a cut was made – a judgment call they would say in soccer referee circles, they may not be able to overturn his decision.

I suspect most places would not have any refs if they could overturn anything, regardless of whether judgment was used or incorrectly interpreting a rule occurred.

I hate to say it but I predicted he wouldn’t get tht to go his way. Like I said rarely does the commission overturn a ref decision because it makes their ref look weak and incompotent no matter how weak and incompotent they really r. So the back them no matter wat. Its sad but an undeniable truth. Good luck to bonner in his rematch.

  • Chrisl says:

wow, why do we have reviews again???

Not that I have expected to see much turnover with the decisions but this is one I thought deserved to be overturned.

  • Johnny says:

That sucks that the ref made a mistake which affects someone’s record in a negative way. I would have thought that if Bonner was able to show the ref was incorrect, the loss would come off his record. Suck, but I have a feeling they are still trying to work out some of the bugs with review/instant replay.

it sucks that he was robbed like this but from what i heard and saw bonnar was on his way to losing this fight anyways.. i didnt get to see most of the fight because my computer was fudging up but i did see the headbutt.. im not sure how they came to this conclusion but im looking forward to seeing how bonnar changes his gameplan

Wow, government is incompetent all around the world, not just in the US.

  • fingerssfv says:

Yeah, it isn’t right to have rulings against you, when you are right. Look at the WEC fight between George Roop and Leodard Garcia. Roop was in an advantageous position, kneed Garcia in the chest, but referee Kevin Mulhall stopped the action, warning Roop of the knee to a downed opponent, which never happened, but they had to start back up on the feet, Roop losing the advantage. Later in the fight, Roop kicked twice that came awfully close to Garcia’s jewels, and the Ref deducted a point from Roop. the final Judges’ decision was a Draw for the fight, costing Roop his win. Mulhall boobooed big time in that fight, and Roop should try to appeal that decision as well, but you know how those rulings go. He won’t have that judgment overturned, either.

Now someone correst me if I’m wrong, but when in later rounds of a fight when an accidental illegal blow occurs, don’t they sometimes look at the outcome of the first two rounds and decide a winner that way? At least that’s how I believe the rules were in PRIDE, and probably still in today’s Japanese promotions. Keep in mind that Fedor’s only blemmish comes from a cut produced by an illegal blow from TK. And I haven’t heard him complain once about it.
