At UFC on FOX 20 tonight, Holly Holm will be competing for the first time since she was choked out by Miesha Tate in March, and lost the bantamweight crown. The decorated striker will be taking on Valentina Shevchenko, who was decisioned by the new champ, Amanda Nunes, in her last outing.
It will be interesting to see how Holm performs, considering it wasn’t long ago, people were predicting she’d have a lengthy reign as the 135 champ. Leading up to UFC 196, hardly anyone was saying Tate would take out Holm.
Well, recently Holm was asked to recall the final moments of her bout with Tate, which saw the latter choke her unconscious, with a rear-naked-choke. Her is what the former boxing champ said (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I can get out, I can get out, I can get out,” Holm said while recalling her thoughts during the bout’s final seconds. “And then I woke up to the roaring of the crowd. I saw the crowd and I was like, ‘ugh.'”
“I didn’t think, ‘I’m gonna go out, I’m not gonna tap,'” Holm added. “I really was thinking, ‘You know what? I can get out of this.'”
It was a crazy fight, and one Holm appeared to be en route to winning.
UFC on FOX 20 will go down at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. In the co-headliner, Edson Barboza will battle fellow lightweight contender, Gilbert Melendez.
