Cain Velasquez: I’m Ready for Brock Lesnar

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Mar 10, 2010 at 4:11 pm ET37 Comments

Cain VelasquezFresh off his first-round knockout of Antonio  Rodrigo Nogueira at last month’s UFC 110, heavyweight contender Cain Velasqeuz recently talked with MMA Fighting about a potential fight with champion Brock Lesnar:

“Yes. I’m ready. I think I’ve been ready for a while. The way this sport works is you’ve just got to prove yourself when you get the chance. I want to fight the best so I can be the best.

I don’t know what I do better but I do know I’d be ready. I know what I can do, I know I train with really tough guys, and I know I’d prepare myself to give him a really good fight — I think it would be a really good fight between us.

I think I’d have to wear him out for the first two or three rounds, because he’s so big and strong. I’d need to be weary of him at the beginning. I think that’d be my best option, trying to do that. He’s a great athlete, and he has wrestled in the NCAAs, and you have to be a top athlete to do that, but I think that would be my best bet.”

Be interesting to see how he plans to wear Lesnar out for 2-3 rounds. With a 25-35lbs weight disadvantage, I don’t think he’ll be able to keep Lesnar down for that long. Best bet is to keep it standing and leg kick the hell out of him. Going to be a helluva fight if it happens.

    • BuzzBradski says:

You’re probably right, but no matter who you are, I think it would be hard to ‘keep it standing’ with Lesnar. When that man wants you on the mat, that’s probably going to be where you end up. Cain would have to be very intelligent with his ring positioning and be wary of kicking too much.

      • Protoge says:

I dont think cv has a chance, brock Is a freak of nature and very gifted athlete and knows what he’s doing, although I think this match is going to be an even bigger slaugter then the Mir/Lesnar match, never the less I still want to see it and lets not forget lesnar is the champ and is champ for a reason and personally I think brock is going to be champ for a long time because he’s in a different class all by himself and hopefully he has another match with Frank so he can clean the floor with him worse then before after the trash talk Frank said about him wanting to break lesnars neck,Frank does not respect him cuz he put him in his place and knocked him out and took his title.lesnar is the type of man you show respect to weather you like him or not,cv is not in the same league as lesnar when it comes to speed size strength and dominence, its nearly impossible to beat him cuz of his size and strength, submission would be the way but to submitting lesnar will not be easy,I would have to say its going to be lesnar with the win on this one,a first or seconed round ko

      • kable9405 says:

@ Protege. When did Lesnar ever Knock out Mir???? maybe u know a different Lesnar cuz the one i know Roy Nelson’d the hell out of Mir but at no point did i ever see Lesnar knock anyone out. no one in the UFC has ever knocked out Nogueira but Velasquez. Mir hurt Big Nog pretty bad but did not knock him out.If anyone is gonna knock Lesnar out is going to be Velasquez. i just cant wait for this match so it can prove to many of you guys that is not the size of the fighter but the HEART of the fighter, and Velasquez has heart.Velasquez has world class wrestling, he has Knock out power, and a great heart. I love Lesnar since wwe but i really want someone to put him to sleep(maybe just to prove that size is not a big factor).

      • jcohl says:

@ kable9405 – I agree with you that heart is important in an MMA fighter’s make-up, but no one has more heart than Randy Couture, who by the way possesses Olympic-class wrestling skills, and look all the good it did him against Brock Lesnar, who outweighed him by probably 55-60 pounds come fight night…

  • GarRule says:

I have to say…if there’s ONE fight I could see right now, this would be it. That, and a Serra / BJ Penn 2. Drop to 155 dude!

    • supermin says:

damn man we all know ur in love with Serra stop it already.. ur in wrong post

    • Brent says:

or if serra wins another fight maybe he can reintoduce Penn to 170

    • Harvai says:

dos santos vs cain would also be an amazing fight to see

      • Kable9405 says:

I would hate to see that fight cuz those are my two favorite heavyweight fighters but if it goes that way i think dos santos will beat cain.i love velasquez cuz he is the sh!t and plus he is one of the few hispanics that r really talented in the UFC(me being hispanic also it feels good that we shine in this sport), but dos santos is something else. Something tells me that dos santos will be the champ soon and WILL hold the belt for a long time.

  • jcohl says:

This thread to be followed by:
jcohl: Cain Velasquez is no way in He11 “Ready for Brock Lesnar” [after the jump]
    :P
    Just kidding.
I’m pretty sure than NO ONE at the frenZy is ready for “jcohl, MMA journalist”.

But seriously, about CV and the Neanderthal, it needs to be said, and with no disrepsect towards CV intended.
Assuming Lesnar returns to the sport with the same physical attributes he left it with, and continues working on his overall MMA game and developing catch-wrestling sub-skill with the same focus and dedication he had before his medical leave, CV wouldn’t make it 10 minutes with Lesnar, let alone win the title.
He’s too small, his wrestling is good but not better than Lesnar’s, and while his speed and athleticism are possibly equal to Lesnar’s, this is really a minus when you consider Lesnar will weigh 280 on fight night, and CV MAYBE 250.
The smaller man in a fight should be the quicker and more athletic by a distinct margin, which isn’t the case here.
Now if Lesnar returns somehow diminshed from his 100 form, thats a different story. If CV displays greater quickness and sharp takedown defense, and keeps the fight standing for long stretches and at a range where he could utilize his superior striking, then maybe, MAYBE he could do something with a less-than-prime Lesnar.
But thats a lot of “ifs” and “maybes”. I think we need to see Lesnar against the Mir-Carwin winner to determine how much “Lesnar” Lesnar still has in him, after his recovery from serious medical issues, if you follow.
If he comes back at 100%, or even better or somehow bigger than he was at 100, CV is going to wake up after their fight staring at the arena lights and encircled by a chalk outline wondering, “WTF?!”…

    • Will says:

100% agree. Like you said, no disrespect to CV, but he is a small HW. The new breed of HW’s are cutting to make 265 and come in around 280-285 at fight time. If Carwin gets past Mir, IMO he will, they will need to re-enforce the cage for Lesnar vs Carwin.

    • TC says:

But I am a lil bit disappointed reading your post. You are not ready to give some props to CV even if he wins against a legit lesnar. Coz you will say lesnar was not “Lesnar” :\

      • BuzzBradski says:

I’m pretty sure Jcohl would be able to tell the difference between a prime Lesnar and a sub prime Lesnar. And I’m also pretty sure he would give props to any fighter that deserves them.

Hey, and besides, a sub prime Lesnar is still something to be reckoned with. Seriously though, I don’t think it will even take one performance for most of to tell whether or not Lesnar will return to his original self. Nowadays there are so many training videos posted/leaked that we will know long before the opening bell.

It wasn’t long ago that articles were stating that Lesnar, prior to his illness, was not performing at 100%. If that’s true, then even Jesus should be nervous.

      • jcohl says:

@ TC – Apologies if you thought I wasn’t giving CV his props, so I’ll try putting it another way:
If both Lesnar and CV come to the cage on fight night at 100%, I’m pretty sure Lesnar is going to silverback his way to another hard-to-watch win.
However if I’m wrong, and both men come to the cage on fight night at 100% and CV KTFO’s Lesnar, I’ll be the first to post that I was dead wrong, and will be delighted to have been dead wrong.
Just to be clear, I’m no fan of Brock Lesnar, which a lot of these guys who have been reading my stuff for awhile now could tell you.
I’m not posting as a Lesnar supporter, but as an objective fan of MMA as it relates to the outcome of this theoretical throwdown.

And thanks, Buzz, for letting TC know the score before I had a chance to get back to him.
        Much obliged…

  • JAWBREAKER says:

Smaller beat big when smaller is smart, first with the head then with the heart.

    • Will says:

Smarts aren’t gonna do much for ya when a 285lb gorilla is on ya throwing hammer fists to your dome.

      • JAWBREAKER says:

I know, I was just trying to be funny. But Mir did say Lesner hasn’t shown he has knock out power at least not like Carwin

      • Will says:

Mir says A LOT of sh!t about Lesnar! To say Lesnar doesn’t have knockout power when your face looked like a beat-up pumpkin, is kind of a joke. Granite he didn’t “knockout” Mir, but he did give him an old fashioned ass whoopin.

      • JAWBREAKER says:

I didn’t say he couldn’t pound people into cookie dough but he has knocked any one out either.

      • Crmtde13 says:

On the same token, carwin has knockout power, but he has also been rocked, i.e. GG

      • Kable9405 says:

Im gonna laugh my a$$ off when Velasquez beats Lesnar. Some of u guys give the guy too much credit. Y?? cuz he F5′D the Rock? or cuz he was tapping on a 46 year old man like 50 times?? or cuz he Roy Nelson’d Mir the second time?? the guy only has what 5 fights in his whole career yet has not been able to knock anyone out. if he is a gorilla and is 285 on fight night with a hand that needs 5X gloves, why hasnt he knocked someone out?? the same look all u guys had when Velazquez kncked out Big Nog is the same look u guys are gonna have when he faces Lesnar. I like Lesnar since WWE, the guy is good but i dont think he should be rank #2 in the world with 5 fights (4-1). Cain deserves all the respect u can give him. More than half of the people here said Nog was gonna beat Cain and what happened?? Cain and Dos Santos r the hottest Heavy weights right now these two guys r Hungry!!! and if either of these two guys gets Lesnar its gonna be one hell of a fight!!!!

      • Amped says:

I’ll counter you by saying that CV almost got dropped on multiple occasions by a less than stellar Kongo. Mir is more skilled than both Lesnar and CV, and his advantage was neutralized by Lesnar’s gameplan. Bottom line is, with the current hw crop, if Lesnar wants it on the ground, it’s going to the ground. I really hope he does come back at 100%.

      • JAWBREAKER says:

I agree with you about the skill Mir has but he is not a wrestler and I think Lesner would have a tougher time taking CV down, and would have to do a little more stand up, and by the way CV looked in his last fight that’s going to give Lesner some problems.

  • im ready for this fight as well. im ready for lesnar against everybody. you know IF he loses his belt hes gonna be the guy every heavyweight would LOVE to have on their win resume. and i IF he loses his belt i think any up and coming heavyweight will have to face him for the title shot and i dont see him losing two in a row. maybe CV has the next title shot but you know that is still a little while away.

  • conflict says:

I just don’t see how everyone thinks lesnar is so Great? I mean the man has only won 4 fights in his carrer and they were all won by purely overpowering the other man. No skill was used really other then his wrestling. If u look @ the couture fight ull see the randy was winning the fight till he got clipped. I think overall CV is a better overall fighter but he will have to overcome the mountain of a man named Brock Lesnar. I truly believe this will be bRocks hardest fight to date. And he might even lose if he get caught by one of those bricks by CV

    • BuzzBradski says:

Correct about Couture doing a good job in that fight until he got clipped.

To beat Brock, a fighter will have to be physically strong (compete in the clinch), mentally strong (survive the first round and a half), good at defending takedowns with skill (as opposed to brute strength), possess KO power and be quick (hands and feet).

But most of all, he must be smart. He must have a good game plan and he must execute it almost flawlessly.

It doesn’t matter how many fights Brock has. If it takes that much to beat him, that’s pretty impressive.

Can Cain do all this? He probably has more of a chance than most of the HW contenders. Would I like to see it happen….oh hell yeah.

      • jcohl says:

If CV beats Lesnar, he can name the Vegas club he wants to drink all night in, and then go up to the suite of his choice with the escort of his choice, and I’ll gladly pay his tab…
        :)

    • jcohl says:

@ conflict – I’ll give you 5 quick reasons, facts actually, none of which are in dispute, as to why so many people think Lesnar is “so great”:

      1) his freakish strength and size
      2) his freakish speed [for a man his size]
      3) his freakish athleticism [again, for a man his size]
      4) he’s currently the most accomplished and effective wrestler in the UFC HW division
      5) his almost supernatural aptitude for MMA.
Remember, this man beat Randy Couture in only his fourth professional fight, having had only the most basic of MMA training, and captured the UFC HW championship. When else has anyone in the UFC won the HW title in their 4th pro fight from a Hall of Famer?
Also, you watch the second Mir fight at 100. Consider the skill and experience advantages that Mir has over Lesnar.
And then watch what Lesnar does to Mir.
Really watch it, and not just go thru the motions. You can actually see Lesnar using skills like body positioning and catch-wrestling to seatbelt Mir and bludgeon him red and dead.
He won not just with his Neandethalic size and strength, but real life martial arts technique, combined with his “Brock smash!” MMA mindset.
Truly disturning IMO if you aren’t a Lesnar fan.
Also, seeing Brock Lesnar using catch-wrestling to beat a BJJ superstar like Frank Mir is like seeing a gorilla order a new hard drive for his desktop on his iPhone or something.
      Almost surrealistic, for sure.

Hope this makes the muddy waters a bit clearer for you, my friend…

  • i agree conflict im not a huge lesnar fan but obviously lesnars wrestling is good and hes got hams for hands and blah blah blah but i gaurantee champion or not nobody would ever look past him kind of like alot of people may be thinking that mir is looking past carwin.

  • Ironfistpat says:

doesnt anybody remember the falcon punch he landed on heath herring?! He didnt knock him out but sh!t he LITERALLY rolled him over he stuck him so hard. That was his first punch in that fight too if my memory serves me correct. Herring also has a granite chin, tha man went with cro cop and fedor when they were in their prime and THEY couldnt knock him out. Look the point is people if Brock comes back 100 percent…I pity tha fool they put in front of him and shut the cage door. You think Mir talks trash lol? Yeah he is good at it but Lesnar has been sidelined for months now and Im purdy sure he is really pissed not only at Frank Mir…but at everything. Some people were born to be doctors….others a police officer or a marine biologist maybe. Then there are those who are born warriors, and Lesnar was put on this planet to hurt other people. He is a warrior and I hope he comes back 100 percent to answer all the questions

  • ceasar says:

well you got lucky agaisnt nogy, and brock lesnar would beat you up, pretty bad… his hands are carved out of italian cement and his body was chiziled out of marable and stone… he is the ultimate brick **** house !!!! only fedor can truly stand up to the beast and claim the title… them again i like cain, but brock is just a cool champion

  • Ryan says:

Cain is gona need to learn some stand up and also gain at least 30 lbs if he ever wants to compete with the big boys! Carwin would take Cain’s head clean off! He needs to hit the gym and beef up because the days of the 240 lbs guys are long over, Cain aint no Fedor and will never even be close!

  • Doug says:

I think alot of people are forgetting the fact that Brock Lesnar, before he was diagnosed with his illness, was reportedly only fighting at 60% of his actual strength….60%, and we all saw Frank Mir’s face after the second fight, we even saw Heath Herring get knocked across to the other side of the ring from just one punch…He was doing this at 60%!!! If he makes his return with 100% of his actual strength, I wouldn’t want to be Carwin, CV, Mir, or Dos Santos, call me what you want because of it but I can tell you that I have the utmost respect for those guys wanting to into the Octagon and fight Brock. I do find it interesting though that after the second fight, Brock mentioned in the interview that when Mir knee’d him on the chin (If you look at the video it didn’t look like too strong of a knee since Mir was against the cage tied up with Brock and didn’t seem to have alot of power behind the knee) that Brock was seeing “Tweety Birds”, which leads me to start questionning Brock’s chin… Just a thought.

  • roberto says:

I really want to see brock asleep on the mat, I know Cain can make that possible.
