Fabio Maldonado’s record will no longer show that he was defeated by Fedor Emelianenko, well, depending on what organization’s records you’re looking at….
Last month, Maldonado was handed a majority decision defeat by the judges at EFN 50, which most people thought was a joke. Not only would a lot of refs stopped the fight, when Maldonado was bashing Emelianenko in the first round, but, two judges scored that round as a 10-9.
Well, Maldonado’s camp appealed the defeat, not only because the bout wasn’t stopped, but because Fedor is the President of the Russian MMA Union. The organization oversaw the June 17th card.
Well, the MMA Union has already denied Maldonado’s appeal, by reportedly citing it wasn’t submitted in time, but the World Assocation of MMA has overturned the result. No, the bout hasn’t been declared a no contest, but according to report from MMA Fighting, WAMMA has scored it as a draw…
So, this is probably going to sit much better with the majority of fans. Really, there’s no way the first round shouldn’t have been scored a 10-8, and Fedor did outscore Maldonado for the last two frames.
Other than the controversial decision, it’s going to be interesting to see what comes next for Fedor. Immediately following his bout with Maldonado, the consensus was the UFC would no longer be interested in the free agent. But, Dana White proceeded to praise the legendary fighter for his gutsy performance, and noted that a ton of folks tuned into see the Fight Pass bout. So, guess we’ll see what happens?
