Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione Announced for UFC 113 on May 8

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Mar 8, 2010 at 8:21 pm ET19 Comments

Kimbo SliceRumors that Kimbo Slice could be pulled from UFC 113 to headline UFC Fight Night 22, a likely April 17 event on Spike TV opposite Strikeforce’s return to CBS, were dismissed today, as an expected matchup with fellow Ultimate Fighter 10 castmember Matt Mitrone was officially announced for the May 8 pay-per-view event in Montreal.

The Kimbo-Mitrione matchup was first reported in January and confirmed during last month’s UFC 110, but was never added to the official UFC 113 fight card on UFC.com until today, when the UFC also formally announced the bout:

Canada will get their first dose of the Kimbo Slice phenomenon on Saturday, May 8th, when the Ultimate Fighter alumnus looks to make it 2-0 in the Octagon on the UFC 113: Machida vs Shogun 2 card at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Slice (4-1), fresh off his three round unanimous decision victory over Houston Alexander at the TUF10 finale last December, will be in with a familiar foe on May 8th, as he takes on his Ultimate Fighter castmate, Matt Mitrione in a heavyweight bout made official today.

Mitrione (1-0), an NFL veteran, made his proper mixed martial arts debut on the TUF10 finale card and showed impressive poise and power as he knocked out Marcus Jones in the second round, and he hopes to make another statement when he squares off with Kimbo this spring.

Tickets for UFC 113: Machida vs Shogun 2, are on sale now.

UFC 113 is headlined by a rematch between light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida and challenger Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, while welterweight contenders Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley meet in the card’s co-main event.

ufc you cant keep up with this card with a fight night. strikeforce card is good and i hope everyone tunes in. mabe free ppv would do it but not a fight night.

  • Justin says:

I’m glad that we’re not going to be seeing Kimbo v. Toney on the fight night, that would have been silly.

  • P says:

guys to be fair i think that toney would KO kimbo pretty early on, but i’m kinda guessing

  • P says:

matt mitrione has a very good chin and all round decent standup, to be honest unless kimbo comes in better than he did against huoston alexander i think he’l get knocked out…

  • GarRule says:

I think Kimbo should have been put on the Fight Night card. Kimbo = ratings. The guy is a ratings machine. Dan Henderson?…in MMA cirlces, great fighter to watch…but Kimbo vs. Dan Henderson in the ratings game? Kimbo winsvia KO. Of course, it’s closer to Henderson vs. Kimbo in real life because the fights would be CBS vs. Spike. Kimbo would have taken a BIG chunck out of Strikeforce’s night. Oh well. I will still watch both and DVR them both.

  • Todd D says:

Matt Mitrione? Kimbo is a joke. He will never make it in the UFC. He could not touch any UFC heavy like Mir Carwin, Especially Lesnar.

    • Chrisl says:

he will make it in the UFC as long as he has no aspirations of having a title

    • jcohl says:

“Making it in the UFC” means different things to different people.
For someone like Randy Couture, making it means…well…being Randy Couture, premiere MMA ambassador, real-life Captain America, UFC Hall of Famer, and 5 time, 2 weightclass goldholder :)

Making it for someone like Tito Ortiz and/or Chuck Liddell means coming back and proving that they can still compete at the highest level of MMA known to Man and not embarrass and/or seriously harm themselves in the process.

Making it for someone like Kimbo Slice, and James Toney should pay attention here, almost certainly means making money and avoiding a catastrophic injury like a broken arm or a hyperextended [and shredded] knee, which he’ll be able to do as long as he keeps working on his fundamentals, incrementally improving with each outing, and receives suitable opponents from Joe Silva.
Which is almost guaranteed as long as he can make Dana and the Fertitas some coin, so, y’know…

  • Dirty says:

I gotta give Kimbo some credit here, Mitrione impressed me but I think Kimbo has a very good shot at winning this. The crowd in Montreal is going to fire him up big time and I think he’s going to get pumped up and smash Mitrione with the crowd going insane. Just my guess…..

  • trey_trey says:

WOW! I dont see Mitrione being dumb enough to walk right into Kimbo’s range. He will stay on the outside and pick Kimbo apart. Remember Kimbo has a bum knee and was never that quick on his feet anyway. If Mitrione lands some leg kicks early and often, kimbo will get distracted and get KTFO… Or Mitrione will take him out and sub him in mere seconds! AS always this is just my opinion.

  • Chrisl says:

Ok I’ve been one of the biggest detractors of Kimbo from day one but where is this Matt Mitrione looks like the better fighter coming from? The guy has only one career fight to his name and on the show he was 1-1 w/ a close split decision win over Junk and a guillotine loss. His win over Marcus proved nothing to me as he knocked out someone who looked like he thought this was an ADCC event where no striking was allowed.

Whereas Kimbo actually showed a little bit of grappling and looked like the better striker in his last fight even though his opponent looked like he came off a camp w/ Starnes as his head trainer…

    • Junger says:

agreed. mitrione looks like a bum to me; i never liked him on the show and his performance against marcus wasn’t super impressive either.

    • jcohl says:

chrisl, I’m glad you made the point about all of this sudden Matt Mitrione MMA cred.
If I’d have done it, I would have gotten “Captain Buzzkill’ed” about attacking poor defenseless posters again…
      ;)

    • trey_trey says:

In short, I guess I was trying to say is that Mitrione is far more intelligent than Kimbo and should use Kimbo’s bad knee to his advantage. I dont care for Mitrione… I just think it could/should play out that way. If he is smart enough to stay out of range and use his kicks… it should only be a matter of time. IMO

      • Justin says:

I haven’t seen any evidence that without a doubt proves to me that Mittrione is actually smarter than Kimbo… just sayin.

  • James says:

I’ll be watching both. Gotta love DVR…

  • oh no too many fights in one night :(
