UFC 200’s Gegard Mousasi Weighs-In on Whether Bisping – Henderson II Should Happen

More than a few people want to see Michael Bisping defend the middleweight belt versus Dan Henderson next, but Gegard Mousasi clearly isn’t on board with the proposed fight…

Since Bisping turned the MMA world upside down last month, by knocking out Luke Rockhold, a long line of challengers has formed for the new champ. One of those men is Henderson. Although the legend isn’t currently ranked in the top ten, a lot of fans have been pushing for Bisping – Henderson II. The latter bombed Bisping out back in 2009, and the champ has said he wants to avenge that defeat. In June, Henderson scored a vicious KO win over Hector Lombard.

But, as noted above, Henderson is far removed from the #1 contender slot. Thus, this is why, Mousasi recently said this on the Three Amigos podcast (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):

“It doesn’t make sense at all. I think Jacare is next in line, and maybe Yoel Romero when he comes back. Chris Weidman should be in the running for a fight, or Anderson Silva. Even Georges St-Pierre wants to fight him. It really doesn’t make sense, but this sport is not about who earns it or not, it’s just about who is more popular or who is gonna do better pay-per-views. It’s entertainment, and it’s not so fair that way.”

A lot people will likely side with Mousasi on this. Henderson is one of the greatest fighters the game has ever known, but he’s gone 2-3 in his last 5 bouts, and isn’t on a run like “Jacare” Souza or Romero. But, as the vet also noted, title shots aren’t always handed out based on merit. After all, Chael Sonnen was tapped for a title fight with Jon Jones, having been stopped by Anderson Silva in his bout prior. Sonnen hand’t fought at 205 in years…

All this aside, Mousasi is booked to fight Thiago Santos this Saturday at UFC 200. The July 9th card will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada.
