Sage Northcutt has been the target of critics and haters since he arrived in the UFC, and former Bellator champ Michael Chandler believes a lot of it stems out of jealousy.
Northcutt received a big bump from the UFC when he joined the promotion, and not everyone agreed with it. “Super” silenced many of his critics by winning his first two bouts in the Octagon, but after he was submitted by Bryan Barberena, plenty of folks piled on.
Well, it turns out Northcutt was down in Florida training with the Blackzillians recently, at the same time Chandler was. The latter recently spoke with MMA Fighting.com, and Chandler had this to say about the heat Northcutt’s taken:
“He’s a cool guy,” Chandler said. “There’s so much jealousy surrounding that kid. There’s so much animosity from people that don’t even know him. It’s unfair. But, at the end of the day, he’s been put in a situation where he’s in the spotlight and people are jealous of that.”
One can argue whether Northcutt should have received as big of a push as he did, but there’s no question a lot of uncalled verbal darts were sent his way. It’s not his fault the UFC wanted to promote him.
Northcutt’s next bout is right around the corner, as he’ll take on Enrique Marin at UFC 200 on July 9th. Chandler, meanwhile, will battle Patricky “Pitbull” for the vacant Bellator lightweight belt at Dynamite 2 on Friday. That fight could be fantastic.
Chandler decisioned “Pitbull” in their first bout back in 2011.
