Wanderlei Silva Fights Yoshihiro Akiyama “Soon,” Expects Bisping Rematch

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Mar 3, 2010 at 10:00 am ET30 Comments

Wanderlei SilvaWanderlei Silva, fresh of his successful middleweight debut over Michael Bisping at UFC 110 late last month, will return to action against Yoshihiro Akiyama “soon,” a fight previously reported for UFC 115 on June 12 in Vancouver, with a rematch against Bisping likely to follow, Silva recently told MMA Weekly:

“I know I’m going to fight soon. I’m going to have a great surprise for my fans what date I’m going to fight. I’m so close to signing my next fight, we’ll talk about things a little bit more, and I think I’m going to be fighting soon.

“It’s a great match because [Akiyama's] an incredible fighter. He’s got an Olympic gold medal. He’s had great performances in Dream in Japan, (he’s) very famous there. I think it’s a great opportunity, one more really tough opponent, and I’m going to prove in the future it’s possible I can be with the best fighters in 185.

“The next is (Akiyama) and he is number one, and the number two is Bisping because I’m going to give a rematch to him.”

I don’t know why he feels he has to give Bisping a rematch……… I for one am not very interested in seeing that again. Kind of like Franklin vs Henderson 2 which never happened. Been there seen that.

    • Etherbunny says:

It was a close match, closer than I like to admit, and I wouldn’t mind seeing a rematch; h3ll, Wandy is honestly the only fighter that it doesn’t matter who he fights, I will always want to see it. Wandy vs. Akiyama is going to be a great fight although I really wanted Alan Belcher to get a rematch with Sexyama. I’m a big fan of both fighters and I don’t want topick sides, but if I have to, I’ll go with Wandy just because he’s a legend. But either way, I’m happy.

      • Brent says:

I wonder how Wanderli will feel if by the off chance Maia wins the belt. I wonder if Wanderei will become the Shogon from Pride of the middle weight division? I would love to see the winner of Akiyama/Wanderlei fight Marquarte, thats a match im really intrested in.

      • Lex415 says:

I wouldn’t want to see a rematch with Belcher only because I personally thought Akiyama edged him. It was obvious to me, I don’t know what Rogan was talking about. BUT I think Wandy and Belcher would make for a good standup fight!

      • EtherBunny says:

A Wandy vs. Belcher would be pretty sweet Lex, good call on that.

      • nev-o says:

        Content removed. No personal attacks.

      • nev-o says:

hey justin the guy is personally attacking joe rogan? right? im just saying lex 415 doesnt know what he is talking about

      • EtherBunny says:

Lex isn’t personally attacking Joe Rogan, Lex stated that he disagreed with Joe Rogan. I see no personal attack in the following quote, “I don’t know what Rogan was talking about”. It’s called an opinion.

      • Justin says:

        nev-o,
Ether summed up why what Lex said was not a personal attack. The context of what you said, versus what he said is the difference between personal attack and expressing disagreement.

      • Lex415 says:

Wow, I don’t even know what happened. I forgot about this thread and someone was going off on me? I miss all the fun!

        Nev-o,
Ether was right, I was stating an opinion and I didn’t mean any disrespect to Joe Rogan. I was just stating how I felt, the same way you obviously had to state the way you felt.

  • ceasar says:

lol i agree, henderson and franklin, big deal, it was boring… if silva gave a rematch he would end up destroying bisping… oh well

  • Dr.Doom says:

wandy beats bisping in the first round if they fight again . He’s gonna look at the tapes and see that a bit more pressure on Bisping in the beginning will make for a short fight .

    • EtherBunny says:

I agree, he was too tentative throughout the whole fight up until the end of the third round where he almost scored a TKO. HE should have pressured him more, I was yelling at the t.v. in BWW and my friends thought I was insane/ too drunk…well, I can’t argue with the latter.

      • Brent says:

hahaha i think Wanderlei was tentative because he was comming off some losses and felt he needed a win.

  • Well i think in the rematch that bisping is gunna ground and pound the living hell out of the uglyest fighter in the ufc!..Gee wonder what kind of comments thats gunna get out of you guys?..Seening how everyone loves silva, thank god Rampage broke his chin in half!!

    • nev-o says:

hey guy rampage is only 1-2 against wandi hmmmm have you seen the pride videos, and bisping is a terrible wrestler and a boring fighter…..let me guess you think he beat hamill as well? hahaha

  • jcohl says:

    Wand fighting Akiyama “soon”?
    Can’t wait.
    Wand rematching Bisping sometime thereafter?
    Not so much…

  • Rosie Perez says:

i would waay rather see wandy and akiyama then bsping and akiyama thank god silva won. bisping is hopefully gonna lose to miller and silva hopefully beats akiyama and leaves bisping so far down the middleweight latter that a rematch would make no sense. fish and chips, fish and chips, fish and chips.

  • Jackal312 says:

I don’t know, I think I’ve had enough of Bisping for a while. Akiyama will be a great fight, but I REALLY want to see Silva fight Chris Lebon. Both of them are brawlers, and while Lebon’s record is kinda shakey, I’ve never seen him fight and think “that was boring” afterwards, which is why I never miss his fights. Seriously, give Lebon a chance. That fight would be great no matter who won in the end.

  • i can walk backwards fast as you can says:

Silva looks like that thing on totall recall qwaaad qwaaad get to the reactor lol when he said i more pretty now to joe rogan i paused and thought to myself this is like tubbaca IT DOES NOT MAKE SEYNSE. You guys need to show some respect to bisping i think he could beat maia and didnt do to bad against wandy. No one talks crap about maia who has no stand up and got smashed by nate in seconds and is now fighting the best mmartist their is for the title and will lose in seconds again or sonnen who comes out with crap like “anderson is a fag who never fought a wrestler” clearly insulting henderson. Theres bigger crap talkers than bisping and i see people saying stuff like miller is pretty good with a good ground game then they will say bisping is crap but its obvious bisping will smash miller. Do you think miller or maia could last 3 rnds with wand and belcher got beat by jason doomed day that bisping crushed but now belcher is the man. Then i see some american fans say we dont hate bisping because he is from uk followed bye tea crumpet and fish n chip jokes. I think hardy has a better chance of beating gsp than maia has against silva but eveyone is very vocal about hardy getting his shot. I support american fighters and know bisping needs to hit alot harder to be a real contender but i think for some reasons americans want the uk guys to fail obviously not all of you. I carnt remember bisping wishing aids or death on someone or takin roids or smashing up the tuf house and come on lads which one of you wouldn’t like to beat the piss outa demarques johnsons never mind squirt water on him.

    • Justin says:

I think people have a bigger problem with Bisping, because they feel that he’s gotten favorable treatment for being the UFC’s UK posterboy. Whether or not that is true, is another issue. I’m American and I don’t really have a problem with Bisping, I’m not a fan, I sort of used to be, but he’s done some things to rub me the wrong way so I’m not so much of one anymore. Even being a fan I was realistic about his abilities.

There’s American fighters that I used to be a fan of too, that did things to rub me the wrong way, that I’m not a fan of anymore either. I’m as patriotic as they come, but I’m not going to hate a fighter just because they are from another country, it’s not their fault they weren’t born here. ;)

    • jcohl says:

I hear where you’re coming from, but speaking strictly for myself I can tell you the 2 problems I have with Michael Bisping specifically.
      1) As Justin said, some people feel that Bisping has been fast-tracked due to promotional issues. I’m one of those people.
      2) Bisping talked a lot of sh!t and repeatedly disrespected Hendo, one of the most decorated [and one of my favorite] fighters during TUF 9.
      I’m not a huge fan of sh!t-talkers, so, y’know.
Other than that, I’m cool with any MMA fighter who exhibits passion and sportsmanship in the cage, regardless of where there hometown is…

    • Brent says:

      Backwards walking person

First off i think we can all agree that Hardy stands a better chance against GSP then Maia does agaist Silva. I will also agree that there is alot of noise about Hardy getting the Shot but there were alot of people making noise about Maia too (myself included). But understand this is two different situations, Belfort was supposed to fight Silva and Maia was a quick replacement.

Second, I dislike Bisping becuase i feel he is a total Jack A$$ who has an Ego larger Jim Morrison had, which i feel is unwarrented especially after punch heard around the world. Also Tea and crumpet jokes are our attempt at jokes that arnt that funny, just like the UK’s attempt at Yankie jokes. Just like we have jokes about how people from the UK have bad teeth and you guys have jokes about us sueing over everything (and their is some truth to be had in those jokes :) ).

Lastly, I dont think Americans want UK guys to fail, I mean i real like Wilks and i dont know if he counts as a UK guy but i was stoked when he choked out Demarques Bj Penn style, i just think that there happens to be more US fans (at least on this site) and they want to see their guys win.. Its just a numbers thing. Like if this was mmafrenzy.uk i bet it would be a different story.

  • i can walk backwards fast as you can says:

ok i dont know any decent uk sites they never seem to have many people commenting lol but you lads carnt hold it against a fighter that is being pushed on the marketing side of things because thats what the ufc is doing for their own benefit. Gsp has cleared out his division thats why hardy got the shot where as they could have found anderson a more suitable opponent maybe at 205 i mean they say he’s the best but he is fighting a guy with no stand up its a disgrace to the fans and a waste of one of andersons fights in the ufc like cote and leites. Can you imagine if bisping edged wand and got this fight with anderson the american fans would go ape **** and rightly so but maia was stopped by nate just like bisping was by henderson. I really dont think bisping is a bad guy i think he is a guy you would have to meet in a non competitive environment to realise he is pretty cool. I knew hendo would beat him deep down ruined my ufc 100 completely i barely could even stop crying till i saw mir get battered silly lol got the whole collection of dvd’s beshides ufc 100 FKIN CHUCK NORRIS i mean dan henderson. And how do you think reljic dolloway maia belcher or even sonnen and nate would fare against hendo because he beat wandy like bisping and beat belfort. I think its time they started putting a few guys in the weight class they belong in like anderson at 205 gsp at 185 rumble at 185 i think rich was hiding at 185 before silva chased him out . Or maybe a new weight class between lhw and mw would solve alot of problems especially at ww and mw and lhw aswell.

Don’t know what that last bit was about, so it’s gone, lets stay on topic.
    -Justin

  • nicothehut says:

Bisping and Hardy both talk too much **** I think thats why lots people have problems with them. I meet a very nice guy for the UK at UFC 102 who dissed bisping more then anyone i ever met. I think every one should watch out for Paul Daley hes the true UK fighter with a real title shot.
