Stephen Thompson wasn’t able to add another highlight reel stoppage to his resume at UFC Fight Night 89, but the surging welterweight did work his way to a clear cut win over Rory MacDonald.
MacDonald had trouble finding Thompson throughout tonight’s main event, and although he was able to land a few telling shots, the elusive striker found the mark more often. After five rounds concluded, it was pretty clear Thompson would be handed the decision win, and that’s exactly what happened.
In the co-headliner, Donald Cerrone became the first man since 2010 to stop Patrick Cote. Cerrone punished the rugged welterweight with leg kicks and hard left hands. In round three, Cerrone dropped Cote with another big left, and finished the fight with punches from above.
