Andrei ArlovskiFormer UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski has a new deal with Strikeforce and will end a near year-long layoff when he returns to action against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at the promotion’s May 15 Showtime-televised event in St. Louis.

The multi-fight, 16 month contract was announced by Arlovski on his official website, while Sherdog first reported his matchup with Silva.

“I cannot wait to get into the ring and show the world what I have been working on the last few months,” wrote Arlovski (15-7), who won five-straight over the likes of Roy Nelson, Ben Rothwell, and Fabricio Werdum between 2006 and 2008 before losing to Fedor Emelianenko in Affliction last January and dropping his Strikeforce debut to Brett Rogers in June.

Silva (13-2), the former EliteXC heavyweight champion who tested positive for steroids in 2008, scored back-to-back wins over Yoshihiro Nakao and Jim York in Sengoku last year to push his win streak to six-straight, before losing to Fabricio Werdum in November in his Strikeforce debut.

Be a good fight, takin AA. Hopefully a rematch with Fedor can be after?

  • Will says:

Not to knit-pick, but Wersum should be Werdum.

  • Will says:

Also talking Overeem vs Rogers for this card, starting to look like a HW tourney.

  • love4thedead says:

Hells yeah the pibull is back I don’t care what his detractors say he is one of my favs to watch. Hopefully he is taking mma seriously and givin up on boxing

    • Justin says:

He supposedly had a boxing exibition Saturday against Fres Oquendo, but I can’t find anything about how that went.

      • Claymor says:

I watched the fight live on Andrei’s web site. It was an exhibition match so essentially a sparring match. Still Andrei caught Fres with a stiff left jab in the third round that nocked Fres to his knees. Overall it was a fun type event. Toward the end of the fourth Andrei even shot in for a take down and both fighters got a laugh out of it. Andrei has been really evaluating his focus and training his ass off for the last 10 months. I’m really looking forward to seeing him back.

Other puppy that the Fedor the bum could beat on.. Strikeforce could atleast find some up and coming HW.. why Hong Man Choi too busy ha..

    • Rosie Perez says:

      bobby lashley?

      • supermin says:

i love too see lashley suceed but at 33 with only wrestle skills dont think his up and coming.. his built like a freak but doesnt even have the talent brock…hopefully he well prove me wrong

    • Eldiablo says:

Everyone bashes on Hong Man Choi and Fedor for that fight, but you need to consider that Choi a year before that beat 4X K-1 Grand Prix winner Semmy Schilt in a kickboxing match. There was a lot of hype surrounding Choi back then. Yeah obviously you take down the giant and you’ve got yourself a limb to rip off, but doing that to a 7’2, 300+lb monster is easier said than done.

Also, if you’re going to bash a fighter by saying stuff like, “Other puppy that the Fedor the bum could beat on”, at least get your grammar and sentence structure right.

    • JennaVonDell says:

It will be great to see a favorite back in the ring showing what he’s made of. Things aren’t over for AA, he’s just starting!

  • Eldiablo says:

Considering Silva’s great chin and AA’s lack thereof we could be in for somewhat of an upset.

  • Rosie Perez says:

i always like watching arlovski fights, hopefully he does good. overeem vs. rogers? weird

  • njmma says:

Hahaha…another UFC has been…Strikeforce is getting better and better every day.

  • Rosie Perez says:

i bet the never was will be at home watchin the has been on tv

  • Justin says:

Hard one to choose. Arlovski has better stand up, and should have a decent ground game, should the fight go there, but his chin may betray him again. Definitely worth watching, IMO.

  • jcohl says:

If AA has recovered from his rectal-cranium inversion, this could be big news for Strikeforce…

  • muaythai4life says:

I know I will get flamed for this but…. I don’t think Arlovski has a bad chin

His loss to Tim Sylvia was more surprise than anything. He was standing, then an upper-cut and he wasn’t anymore. He was pretty much awake the whole time and the look of shock was on his face when the ref called it.

His loss to Fedor was more his fault than Fedor’s skill. Arlovski couldn’t have possibly put his chin in any better of a place to take a massive over-hand right form Fedor (who does pack great power in his hands)

Rogers was really his only chin check moment, and I think anyone could get clipped and go down. He wasn’t completely out but yeah that fight sucked to watch

So that being said I think the time off is good for Arlovski, but I hate hearing about fighters and their weak chin. Every Arlovski fight from here on out will be a question about his chin no matter how many huge shots he eats. Same with GSP since the Serra fight or Forrest. The guys compete anymore hit really hard with 8 ounce gloves. Anyone could have been knocked out/tko’d from those shots.

That being said I have Arlovski by near murder over Silva. big foot got out classed in the stand up game by Werdum, what will a real boxer do to him?

  • Truemmafan says:

I totally agree with you Muaythai4life, lets be realistic with 8 oz gloves on and people weighing 230, 240, 250+ lbs swinging bombs at you if anything lands its going to phaze a person. The human chin isnt designed to be hit as Joe Rogan is famous for saying. To say Arlovski has a weak chin i believe is naive, we dont no how hard those shots hes taken actually were and with him working with a coach of Freddy Roaches stature he should enable him with knowledge to help with recovery after being hit and being able to take a punch better ie; rolling with it for example.

Arlovski has a GREAT skill set in my opinion, a very solid ground game and top level boxing in a division where stand up technique is not the best.

If he DEDICATES himself instead of concentrating on pointless exhibition boxing fights aginst no body’s lets hope we get to see this talented fighter back where he belongs, top 10 hw in the world.

  • Claymor says:

Very well said. Watch the fight btwn Rothwell and Arlovski. Big Ben put several big hammers on him and he didn’t fall and so did Tim Sylvia for that matter. Does Paul Buentello (sp) have a weak chin? Andrei sure laid him out easily. How about Tim Silvia himself? Andrei Dropped him twice. No. Any one of those guys can take a hit and keep standing until that hit is in the right place at the right time. The hammer that Fedor threw on Arlovski was one of the most beautiful punches as far as perfect timing and full force I’ve ever seen. Anyone would go to sleep after that. Think Hendo putting Michael Bisping to sleep. Is all commentary about Bisping followed with “Suspect chin”?
