MacDonald is returning to the Octagon this Saturday at UFC Fight Night 89, when he’ll take on the surging, Stephen Thompson. It will mark the first time MacDonald has fought since last July, when he was stopped by Lawler in the fifth round of their epic / bloody battle. The fighters met for the first time in 2013, and Lawler won the competitive fight via split decision.
Well, in advance of MacDonald’s return this weekend, the Canadian told FOX Sports.com the following, while discussing Lawler:
“I wouldn’t be surprised at all if me and Robbie fight another couple of times. I really don’t know how much time he has left in his career, but I know I have many fights left at the top of the sport. If he’s still around in a few years, I wouldn’t be surprised if we fight multiple times.”
Now, if MacDonald defeats Thompson on June 18th, and Lawler defends the belt against Tyron Woodley, August 20th, is Lawler – MacDonald III going to happen next? Chances are no. After all, MacDonald would only be one fight removed from his defeat to Lawler.
But, as the Tristar fighter relayed, there’s certainly a good chance that he’ll face Lawler again. Even if, in fact, both men lose their next bouts. MacDonald is only 26 year’s old and Lawler is 34, so, if they continue to remain on the UFC roster, another scrap could very well happen.
It should be noted that MacDonald’s bout against Thompson this Saturday is the last on his current UFC deal. So, it’s a big bout for the “Red King” on a couple of different levels. A win will keep him in the #1 contender slot, and in a nice spot as he gets set to sit at the bargaining table.
