Dana White is still hoping to book Nate Diaz – Conor McGregor II, but the UFC boss man’s reporting they’re looking at other options now for the latter.
Recently White and fellow UFC exec Lorenzo Fertitta met with McGregor, and the Irish star reported the meeting went pretty well. But, when White and Fertitta met with Diaz, however, things didn’t go so smoothly. Since then, Diaz has acknowledged that the UFC is hoping to have him fight McGregor again at UFC 202 in August, but that talks are ongoing.
Well, recently White told FOX Sports’ talk show host Colin Cowherd the following (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“It’s just madness,” White said. “It’s just been tough. It’s been a tough go-through, so we’re looking at another fight for Conor right now and we’ll see how this thing comes together. But Conor is just so obsessed with Diaz at 170, it’s been crazy.”
“…But, people do want to see Conor McGregor vs. Frankie Edgar or Jose Aldo again too. I’m sure they would want to see him fight Rafael dos Anjos at 155 for that title, so there’s a lot of fights out there for Conor, if we can’t get this Nate fight done.”
Now sure, this could all be a negotiating tactic, if Diaz and his camp are playing hardball in terms of compensation. It’s pretty clear that the UFC wants this bout to happen. After all, it was originally scheduled to headline UFC 200.
Of the possible opponents White mentioned, however, all three are booked for bouts in July (Aldo – Edgar II goes July 9th, RDA vs. Eddie Alvarez goes July 7th). So, if any of those match-ups were to happen, McGregor wouldn’t return to the cage until the end of 2016.
