Dominick Cruz has repeatedly criticized the fighting skills of Urijah Faber, but the bantamweight champ apparently believes his rival would defeat the fast rising, Cody Garbrandt.
Cruz will face Faber in a rubber match on Saturday, in what will serve as the co-headliner for UFC 199. Leading up to the bout, Cruz has let it be known that he’s not overly impressed with the skills of Faber, and has argued the former WEC champ hasn’t evolved much over the years.
Well, according to recent comments from Cruz, he thinks Faber is good enough to defeat the latter’s buddy and teammate, Mr. Garbrandt. While discussing the two at the open workouts on Tuesday, here is some of what Cruz had to say (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“Faber’s the type of guy that if you match him up with anyone in the top five, he’s still up there, he’ll still compete with them,” Cruz said. “I think he beats his boy Cody ‘No Love,’ and I think he beats a couple other guys in this division, in the top five, the top 10.”
“I think he knows Cody, too. I think that while Cody is very good, I just think that, I break down fights differently, I see things a little different you know? Eventually those two are going to end up having to see each other, and if I had to pick one I would probably go with Faber.”
How about that? There’s no doubt that Cruz is one of the best in the business at analyzing fighters and match-ups. But does he truly believe this? Or is he playing some sort of mind game? Faber is a ridiculously talented and well rounded fighter, so, it wouldn’t be that shocking if he truly believes this. Even though Garbrandt took out Thomas Almeida in jaw dropping fashion last weekend.
First things first, however, and that’s the rubber match. If you’re wondering, Cruz is a considerable favorite in the -450 to -650 range to win the bout.
