Stephan Bonnar to Appeal UFC 110 Loss to Krzysztof Soszynski
Stephan Bonnar plans to appeal his loss to fellow light heavyweight Krzysztof Soszynski from Saturday’s UFC 110 event in Sydney, Australia, Bonnar today told Caged In, after Soszyski was incorrectly declared the winner by third-round TKO due to a cut that was actually caused by an accidental headbutt.
Though the fight would have been scored based on the two completed rounds, which Bonnar and Soszynski split, and the partial third round under the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, allowing for everything from a draw to a decision for either fighter, the rules of the NSW Combat Sports Authority, which oversaw the event, make a technical draw the only possible outcome if Bonnar’s appeal is successful.
After the controversial finish, Bonnar and Soszynski both said they want an immediate rematch.

As unexciting as a technical draw sounds, it’s always better than an outright loss, and I think Bonner is definately entitled to a draw at this point.
I had Soszynski ahead on paper anyways.
Didn’t know there was a commission overseeing the event. Good stuff. I hope Bonnar gets his appeal.
I said the same exact thing, I hope he does as well.
Bonnar is %100 justified.
While most sports have respect for rules/an the officiators.
The powers that be must return that respect and do the right thing even if it admits a mistake.
I’m not going to say that Bonnar either was winning the fight at the point of the headbutt, or could have gone on to win if the headbutt hadn’t taken place, but I guess the point is we’ll never know.
I’m pretty sure when this gets looked at, the decision will be ruled an NC or whatever…
i will buy any pay per view that these two are on.
Krystof might of been ahead on paper 2 rounds or it could of been 1 to 1 I didn’t see the judges cards. Stinks for me because I had 20 bucks on Stephen being a 2 to 1 underdog! No refunds even if it’s overturned! Oh well every other fight I bet on was right for the card! That entire card was awesome except for the Mirko fight!
What was wrong with Crocops fight? He stalked and dominated the poor fellow. That elbow that ended it was vicious!!!
I can’t understand why he would need to appeal. Surely the powers that be would overturn something as clear cut as this automatically?
It’s a process, video evidence has to be obtained first. Then of course they’ll make a decision. It’s just how it works really. Shouldn’t take too long though it was pretty obvious
Understood, but I can’t help but wonder why the whole Matt Hamill-Jon Jones thing wasn’t eventually modded into an NC.
Obviously there was something done wrong, but its not like Jones is a dirty fighter or anything, and Hamill has admitted that his shoulder was blown out before the 12-6 bit…
Jones intentionally threw the illegal elbows, he didn’t realize they were illegal at the time, but he intentionally threw them. The fight was immediately stopped following that, regardless of the fact that Hammill couldn’t continue b/c of the shoulder, from my understanding the fight would have been stopped anyways due to the cut over Hammill’s eye, which was caused by the illegal elbow.
Gotcha.
Thanks Justin.
I see what you’re saying, about the whole “unknowingly illegal” thing…
This was an awesome fight. I hope they rematch…
Honestly, I didn’t think it was that great a showing for Hamill, a guy I picked to win over Jones on the forum thread for the TUF 10 finale.
Hamill did his level best, don’t get me wrong, but he seemed almost unprepared for Jones overall speed, athleticism, and moreso the accuracy of his striking.
Plus Hamill got busted up something awful, even before the whole Jones 12-6 illegal strikes thing came into play.
And I’m not sure if thats something that a different fightplan or changed-up training camp can fix, y’know?
Just sayin’…
I believe bonnar is done. The guy just can’t seem to get a win. Plus when does ne fighter ever have an appeal go in their favor when is has to do with their record? He should just move on and prepare for his next loss…
This appeal might very well go in his favor.
