The middleweights are scheduled to fight on June 4th, at UFC 199 in Inglewood, California. The bout will mark the first time Lombard has fought since March, when he was stopped by Neil Magny.
Recently the former Bellator champ appeared on MMA Junkie.com Radio, and Lombard reported he headed to Henderson’s Team Quest in California, way back. According to the heavyweight handed fighter, however, Henderson didn’t give him the time of day (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“He never gave a (expletive) about me,” Lombard said. “I went there, and he never talked to me, so I was like, OK, no worries. And the week after, I made a move.”
“I’m very excited about figh“ting him,” Lombard added later. “He’s one of the guys I look up to. Nevertheless, I’m going to go and knock him out. But it’s going to be an entertaining fight.”
It would be interesting to hear Henderson’s take on this, and whether he recalls this going down the same way. It could be that “Hendo” was just preoccupied with something else. Who knows?
What is certain, however, is that Henderson – Lombard has the potential to be something very special, as the latter noted. There aren’t many middleweights, if any, who hit harder than these two. It will be pretty surprising if it goes the distance.
It’s a crucial fight for the 45 year-old legend in Henderson, as the bout will conclude his current deal with the UFC. Henderson is coming off a stoppage loss to Vitor Belfort in November.
